Default Dreamcast.Com

UPDATE: More and more signs are coming out that this is a scam, so if any of you had any interest in trying if the site ever does go back live, I'd stay away from it until some sort of official confirmation comes out.

Well Kotaku has reported this, but now the debate is coming up across the internet whether or not it is a scam or not.

Quote:
Sega of Japan has been sighted nosing around our Dreamcasts, asking all sorts of questions. Questions like, "Do you still own a Dreamcast?" and "What's its serial number?" They've just updated their Dreamcast.com website with the first question, and clicking on it takes you to a page where you can use your console's serial number to register for a user.dreamcast.com account. After snagging my trusty console from my entertainment center and plugging in the serial and some other pertinent info, I got a simple email confirmation thanking me for registering. What happens next? No clue, but they're planning something. First they update their Dreamcast trademark to include new terms back in August, and now this. With the tenth anniversary of the console coming up in August, one can't help but wonder what the hell is going on. Re-releasing old games perhaps? Offering really, really extended warranties? All I know is this thing they're doing now needs a massive response, to both show our love for the noisy little console and show Sega that we're ready for whatever Dreamcast lovin' they're willing to toss our way.

UPDATE - I just got my account approved, and now have a relatively useless (myserialnumber)@dreamcas t.com Gmail account! Hooray!
http://kotaku.com/365502/sega-asks-d...wn-a-dreamcast

The main dreamcast.com site is still online but the actual site to register for an email is currently down. Things that have lead to the rumor that it is false is that there are google ads on the dreamcast.com, Sega Japan wouldn't be hosting this on a shared server in Florida which is reportedly where it is being hosted, and lastly the typo on the registration page that is down.

Thoughts? If it is legit, what does Sega have up their sleeves? Dreamcast 2 ?

The dreamcast.com domain has apparently been reregistered to Sega JP since 2005 however, seems a little odd for this to pop-up now and be a scam, but I guess you just never know these days. The site was up for about 8 hours before it got overloaded however, so whatever it is, they did get a lot of people to actually sign up...

Weird...

It would be cool if SoJ would actually do something useful with this.

Ghey... I've already spent $1300 on consoles this generation, there's no way I'm buying another one... No matter how awesome Sega is.

Also, I have no confidence Sega can create quality First Party games anymore... I mean, Sonic hasn't been good since the first Dreamcast...

I don't know, it's just weird that Sega would really would be doing something like this if it in fact is not a scam. That would be like Sony bringing back websites for the PS1, or Nintendo doing it for the N64. It's just odd to say the least, something big is going down, I hope. Maybe a Dreamcast portable?

Well those companies have consoles on the market right now... There's a reason that wouldn't make sense.

Plus, the Dreamcast still gets games in Japan.

You've clearly never played Super Mario Galaxy... Or Sonic Adventure... Or Super Mario 64 for that matter.

Sonic started to suck in SA2, which was the game that started the trend of Sonic games that required you to play as sh*tty sub characters (Like Shadow, and Amy)...

If they made a bug free Sonic, that didn't have a retarded story, and only featured Sonic (and Maybe Tails and Knuckles), it could be good again.

Of course, I don't even know what to say about the Mario comment... I mean, really... GTFO.

To be fair, I'm not a big fan of the 3d Mario games either...
I'm pretty sure the last Dreamcast game in Japan was in March of 07 from what I've read. That's almost a year ago, I doubt any more games will be produced.

A free Dreamcast game download on XBLA/Virtual Console to every Dreamcast owner who registers. That would be kinda cool if they actually had Dreamcast games to download.

I really can't imagine them making a Dreamcast portable, not recently (this or next gen) at the very least. Sega's reputation has gone down the crapper.

BTW: Sonic CD was the last Sonic game I enjoyed. That wasn't even made my Sonic team >_>

I loved Dreamcast when it came out, it was like ooooooo wwwooowww. I wouldn't mind a Dreamcast 2 but it wouldn't survive this Gen.

Well that's because Sunshine was ass... Worst Mario game ever, period...

But Galaxy is amazing on every level... I've long trumpeted Super Mario World as my favorite game ever (not just my favorite in the series), but Galaxy beats it in every way imginable...

Super Mario 64 was good, Sunshine was an abortion, but Galaxy was epic... I love 2D platformers, but Galaxy is the best platformer, ever... Period, end of story...

Or all just one big scam and nothing coming from Sega.

I'd like to see Sega bounce back into the market, but I'm thinking that likely won't happen.

Yeah.. me too.. I don't know how the Dreamcast die out, it was a tight system imo.

I still have my dreamcast but don't have the cables and stuff and the lens doesn't read disc anymore haha.

Totally a scam. The domain is registered to "Shoji Takamitsu", a name that ONLY appears on the web in association with discussion of the new Dreamcast.com site.

Apparently the IP address doesn't even match the old Sega ones.

It's even pulling all the images from sega.jp!
Code:
<div class="logo01"><img src="http://www.sega.jp/shared/images/header_logo_01.gif" alt="SEGA" width="94" height="27" /></div>
<a href="#contentsArea"><img src="http://www.sega.jp/shared/images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1" alt="ナビゲーションをスキップしてコンテンツへ" /></a>
<!-- /logoArea --></div>
etc

Yeah, this is DEFINITELY a hoax. There's this link on the page:
Code:
<div class="contentsBanner01Image"><a href="javascript:void(0)" onclick="openWin('/calendar/home.html','1024','768');"><img src="http://www.sega.jp/shared/images/rig...calender_i.gif" alt="セガカレンダー セガの最新スケジュールを紹介!" width="167" height="95" /></a></div>
This should open http://www.dreamcast.com/calendar/home.html when you click it - 404, not found. Fake, fake, fake.

fake

Seems a bit dodge, but Sega haven't come out with anything? Also I have about 60 people's email addresses all noted in the "to" on the email aswell!!!

Looks like Sega let the URL die years ago, click the dates...

March 16 2005 - Last known date it still pointed to Sega.com

Feb 16 2007 - Current location?

Looks to me Dreamcast.com hasn't been owned by Sega for 3 years... Anyway, why would Dreamcast.com point to SOJ? Dreamcast.com always was for SOA.

So I pinged dreamcast.com and lo' and behold http://72.29.74.51/ was the IP I got. It links to a cPanel set up page. I then pinged SEGA.jp and got the IP 210.174.184.7, SEGA.com: 204.155.67.210, Sonic Team: 202.3.142.231. All SEGA sites are no where near the IP range of dreamcast.com. Running a trace on this IP brings us right back to square one with DimeNoc/dizinc.

SEGA.com is run from San Francisco under their own, internal servers. SEGA.jp and Sonicteam.com are run from inside Japan, as you'd expect.

So to sum up, it's a site not on ANY of SEGA's servers, it's supposedly a Japanese site running on a shared server in Orlando, emails set out are from a dizinc email address, uses Gmail as a front for a Dreamcast email address, the site poses as an official website (including copyright marks from SEGA). It's fake, don't use it. If you have used it, as a few of you have, hope this comes to nothing.
------

Emails sent from dreamcast.com are emails actually sent from a dizinc.com email address, which forwards instantly to DimeNoc. I believe DimeNoc are a hosting company and are actually just the service provider for this scam.

This hit Digg's front page an hour ago, which was plenty of time for the registration page to go down. Looks like the people behind this just missed a literal gold mine of email addresses. But they took the page down, probably after getting a certain number of emails anyway, which I'm sure will get sold on to some SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM companies. Oh happy days. It was a very believable scam, however. One which even I fell for, let this be a lesson to you all. Don't trust the internet.
Apparently there was a link to play-asia.com at one point. Also: mail login page.
