In a odd sense, I was addicted to this game, had some interesting elements to it for a action RPG. That is Arcus Odyssey.
I would have to say without a doubt, this game HAS to be played 2-player, the reason for that is, the creators made it where if you playa 2 player game.. you get the power ups faster, more items as well as that "Doll of life" right from the start, playing single player you were not so lucky.
I will also say this game was PERFECT for a "turbo" controller. Reason is, my favorite charater was the chain whip female user, who would just twirl it around above her head. Also when I got the "Dove Flier" extra character from the jail, I think that was the one that had auto tracking projectiles. It just worked well.. Issue using this method, you could not activate your "shield" to block enemies.
Having this as 2 player was also fun due to the fact it made the game easier and just interesting for the time era to play a RPG with someone.
Game did have magic spells, items to use and equip. You had limited space, which did get annoying after a while, also fighting your friend for the super powerups with either gave you more HP or a upgraded weapon heh.
I played this game alot when it was out. It was addicting, I actually think it effected me more then I 1st let on. Stage 2, when your in the dungeons, it had some SURPURB music, which I actually used as a ringtone for a little while. Also learned how to play that part on a keyboard just cause I liked the melody.
I will still be caught once and awhile playing it as I never did get to beat it.. due to the fact this was a "code" save game, meaning you had to write down tones of letters and numbers to "save" where as now on a emulator, you have save state, which is much more fun to use..
This game may not be for everyone, but it does have its moments and if you get lucky to pair up with a RL friend who DOESNT die, you will get far, I found out that playing alone I couldnt get as far due to lack of the "extra" items and powerups you get from 2player action.
If you like some Action Rpgs that has text speech, magic, weapons, upgrades and solid monsters and groups, this is for you. I wont say its like Gauntlet style, but the way sometimes those monsters swarm up at you, it can feel that way. =)
