Whoo boy, I can already tell you now.. this is gonna be another long post..
NiGHTS into dreams, a CLASSIC Sega Saturn game, the 1st to use a analog stick in its game play which was for flying around, dancing, taking out monsters and inspiring many dreams into many of us. (That and the more combos and styles you could do, would make you a god if you could do it more then anyone else lol)
This game... I always have dreams about, maybe not the game itself, but about the character Aptiva! (The Purple Jester hat looking one)
Dont know.. something is magical about this game, and for the past nights as I thought about what games to talk about this one is on my mind, and I have the intro song stuck in my head lol. (Which I am glad there is a DDR song remake of this hehe)
I dont know, Aside from Lunar, I would have to say this was another seriously played game of mine. Basically you choose one of 2 storylines, Elliot Edwards or Claris Sinclair who will meet and turn into Aptiva (NiGHTS), both suffer from reoccurring nightmares. One night, simultaneously, Elliot and Claris suffer different, but unusually powerful nightmares. The nightmares are so intense, thatboth teens find themselves achieving lucidity: the fully conscious awareness of dreaming, whilst still remaining within the dream. (Sis and I personally.. have this almost nightly.. where the dream itself becomes reality.. I recall many times where I talk to my friend about a event that happened in a dream and they said it never happened. Yet I can remember the full day of events.. what was ate, said, etc. Yet it was all a dream, sometimes I belive the dream itself is more real then real life once you can controll it, you can do many things, magic, flight, speed..If you can master this, you can do this on demand, but I will say this, do not try to overdo it or you will wake out of the dream.. been tempted to make a book about this.. called the "Dream" where the main char finds life within a dream, that a dream is another world in itself that is alive and most people just arent aware of it. Kinda like the Matrix, yet this one can be real, maybe thats why I have dreams of this game and realities...) NiGHTS being something of a protector of dreams you could say to ward off Nightmares. In their dreams, as you fly around entering rings, performing link combos, making a circle in flight to trap enemies in your ring..
You score points and made serious use of the new controller that came pre packaged in the game, The Saturn Analog stick, allthough big and bulky, it was FUN! =D
I remember playing for nights on this game, to get higher scores, unlocking the storylines. Watching the movies. Dreaming of the next flight, something I still wish I was playing, I GOTTA play this again! >.<
I think personally, the one image I love the MOST which I can picture myself doing is this one..
Being ontop of a high place, just looking over things. That and with the moon that way.. reminds me of Lucias Pendant in Lunar 2 hehe.
I remember it being very hard to fly and do some of the tasks they demanded you to do in a time period, as if you failed to do things within a certain time, you turned back into the boy or girl, having to reclaim your 'Ideya' of Purity, Wisdom, Imagination, and Courage again and reenter the sealed temple wherein
is trapped 'NIGHTS', a being of spiritual essence. NIGHTS is a created
being, originally brought into existence to act as a high level 'Nightmaren'
the purpose of which was to banish human souls from the dream realm of
Nightopia. NIGHTS had achieved self awareness and rebelled from this directive,
and so had been imprisoned, lest NIGHTS use the power of Creation itself
against its creator. Once you resummon your flight. Mixing a platform game with new in game flying with style, beautiful graphics for its time and SUPURB handling with that controller made this as much played as any Sonic game at the time!
There was also a XMas demo cd, which had a Xmas style theme to it. Also there were a few tricks in the game that only activated on certain times of the year. Meaning you had to force set your saturn clock to that date to trigger some holiday modes. Was quite cute.
Later on Archie Comics even made NiGHTS into a reall good comic series!
I still have to read these.. >.<
Also Toys were even made.
As I beat the game, I found myself having some SERIOUS fun in the battle mode.. "Reala vs NiGHTS" Reala being the opposite of NiGHTS who still follows the mission to kick out anyone who does not belong.
Where basically in this mode, the goal of the 1 player or 2 player battle mode is to make a full closed circle around the other 3 times to win. This mode was very fun as it required flying skills and imagination.
Needless to say, this game inspired MANY art lovers to draw pictures of this and as you saw, comics. I know I will play this game again once I have a chance, all though it might not be on the real analog controller... my PC one will have to do. =)
I wish they would remake this game on Xbox or PS2 personally.. I know they had for PSO GameCube version a mini game download that hooked into the GBA and you could play the original classic remake on the GBA. But I have not done this yet. (If anyone know how this works fully, please tell me?)
Anyways, I hope this gave you back some fond memories, I know it does for me. ^_^v
