Ahh.. well this is going to be a nice memory. Back when Sega CD came out, game developers designed a new type of game, Movie support! Well allthough this was a downfall as well. I remember it clearly that Sega cd was going down hill because "People do not want to pay 50$ for a VHS tape" was the quote I heard in a review. Which back then, it felt like that, but I argue, people are paying MORE for silly Xbox games that dont even have speech! Sigh...
Anyways, well I have a few games to invoke some memories of mine off of, so decided to put all the "Video" classified games into this one thread.
One of the FIRST and probably for me at the "time" STUPIDEST games I played on the Model 1 Sega Cd was "Sewer Shark"
A game I remember as you racing in a sewer, listening to your little robot helper who told you where to go. Your goal? Just survive and kill monsters in the sewer. I remember QUITE well, that I didnt seem to know what I was doing and ALWAYS crashed at the 1st stage into that wall. (Which happens if your off course) I got sooo pissed, I tried so many paths etc. Didnt realize what I HAD to do till later on.. When GENS came out, I tried it again, THIS time I LEARNED that stupid robot TOLD you with the arrows where to go when it was coming up.. sigh.. looked the same as a "available path" to me, but flashed different. ARG, So I made it a few more levels, ranking up in my code names. (Your 1st code name is DOGMEAT) Seems to be like a "Running Man" type of world.. your stuck in the sewers with a "promise" to get out of them for a job well done, when everyone knows you will never escape.
Had its good moments the game and for a start for Sega cd, it was nice to see video with a actor I think I knew in there.
Next game I remember, Probably one of the more noticed ones and quite unqiue for the time that I LOVED. Was "Make My Video" series! God I spent LOT of time on these! They were SOOOOOO much fun.
There are 3 of them.
I bought Kris Kross when the Sega CD was big and remember renting Marky Mark from Blockbuster. (Yes remember when Blockbuster had SEGA and Sega CD Games! WHooooo) I loved how in the game you could mix it up, add effects and REALLY feel like you were making a music video using popular songs of that time. What was fun is the normal mode of the game where your "callers" had requests that were random and they wanted certain clips OR to be "censored" not to show any skin or so. Was actually very hard, so unless you knew the timing of the clips etc, you would play this a few times over just to get it right, then hear the comments at the end. Was a VERY silly game, but it was a start for things like "MTV Music Generator" and all those other "DJ" type games, Sega CD had one of the 1st using music videos. Wasnt the best looking quality videos, but wow.. it was something. =)
I think my favorite song was "Jump" and "I missed the bus" then from Marks it was I THINK was Vanilia Ice. Least I believe that was this game.. I never played that INXS one.. didnt know em. Needless to say in a group of friends, this game is fun to load up and I think everyone will still have fun with this, I know I did when I reloaded it on GENS. =D
Minor title of mention, yet POPULAR PC game for its time. MEGA RACE!
Ahhh that brings back memories! Classic cut throat "running man" style racing! Grab a certain car, loaded with weapons and RACE! Trying to destory your other racers and where you make it to #1! I never played the Sega CD version, but I am SURE its the same as the PC one. What was fun is.. once you got good at this game, you could earn new cars. Sadly.. for PC this was one of those stupid games where you HAD to have a PERFECT "EMS/XMS" bootup disk since it ALSO needed to have a CD Rom loaded... sigh. Bet you Sega CD was easier to play.. heh. Although silly, this game had its moments, fun cut scenes as well as racing itself, challenging yet classic in gameplay style, I think it could be very underrated since it didnt get that well known, but to me, it was very fun none the less and movies and speech made it much more interesting.
Although this game was NOT fully movie based, it DID have ALOT of movie scenes and so, Jurassic Park! Much better then the SNES and Sega versions of this.
Man, I remember this game well as it was also one of them that came out at the start. This game, you explore in a 3d type view (1st person view) a comming back to the park to collect eggs to save them. You return to a already deserted park, after your helecoper crashes. Well this game was HARD!!! Man trying to find out how to do things, little puzzels, finding the right weapons, keycards for access and how to defend yourself vs hostile dinos! Greeted with speech and movie for history in certain terminals. Also a email type vid link system movie to give you updates on the area and when trouble was coming. I dont know.. at 1st I got stuck badly in this. I never could get past some of these where I had to heal a Tricops, or get the T-Rex eggs. I mean it was a matter of doing things JUST right and you had a time limit as well! That is till these bad guys come after you as well. Was very cute to do a Brono baby call to lure the mother away so you could get her eggs. Lol. All in all, if you LOVE games like Monkey Isle, you would LOVE this one. Very challenging and I am sure you wont beat it on the 1st try.. thats IF you didnt die before that. Least here you can save. =)
Now then, the best for last. Night Trap and Double Switch! (Didnt think I could forget these did you?) hehe.
Ah I think my favorite out of the 2, Because unlike Night Trap, I least could WATCH the story and trap at the same time! Basically your in a hotel type house, your goal? Help "Eddie" escape the basement while keeping the tennents safe from harm as well as his Girlfriend. Otherwise its game over! Loaded with MANY traps this was QUITE challenging! I loved it! Getting NEW traps was fun too, and trapping "Lyle" in the 1st half was hehehe.... Then I remember it was quite the shocker to find out the Lyle was the good guy and Eddie was the bad one! Watching out for these stereo type spys trying to turn off the power box etc. Story line was great as I remember, lot of movies to watch and people to trap! Teeter totter traps, Closets and the fun ones are in the basement! Hehe... Had to be quick or else you would lose the game. Only 1 cd however so it wasnt as long as Night trap, but I think personally it was much more fun. I still try to play it once and awhile. I cant remember if I beat the game. I think I did once GENS came out, because back when it was on Sega CD I could NOT get past part 2 for the life of it! Kept losing to someone.. that and the save feature.. well that was MEAN! You only had 3 times to do it right in your save spots.. meaning if you failed all 3 times, you HAD to start from the start again.. so ouch.. >.< (Where is a save state when you need it?) All in all, if you wanna see some classic retro movie action with a decent story involved, this is one to get!
Ahh a game that actually had THREE versions made for it, due to the fact that it was a "kids" system game and it was TOOOOOO viloent and gorey.. (Yea right...)
You had 3 versions.
Night Trap (Original, Uncensored)
Night Trap (Censored, Kid safe)
Night Trap 32x
I did not have the honor to play the 32X version which claimed to have better graphics and so, but also if I am not mistaken, the 32x version was ALSO censored. So was like no thanks. I am a proud owner of the ORIGINAL one, to all its full "detail" Now this game.. allthough was GREAT and challenging... plus a storyline in multiple rooms... all at the same time >.<, so needless to say it had replay value.. very much so.. My biggest hate about this game was that either you TRAPPED the "vampires" trying to collect blood from their new found guests, or you watched the story.. you could not do both in the game sadly as then you would miss too many traps, and then lose the game. Sigh.... That and getting to the RIGHT room to overhear the "access" code changes was another big bother since it was always random. Watching the story was fun, singing songs, etc. Then later only to learn the mother and father were behind all the recent vanishes of the girls who decided to spend the night there. As for the gore.. I dont really know what the big deal was.. a claw type hook drilling into someones neck and then sucking the blood out.. whopie!.... Good riddence.. even tho I wouldnt have minded them taking that blond out in the shower.. but sadly if THAT happened, game was over. Sigh.. I spend a long time playing this game.. then one day I had the PERFECT magazine.. it gave me the FULL times of where to be and for what! WOOOT! Took the fun out of the game, but least I could progress! Since you could only save in one spot I think and I think that was between disc 1 and 2.
Trapping the vilians was quite fun, sprining rooftops, beds that tilited them out of the window, a full house full of goodies. I kinda wish they would remake these type of games for the PC as they were quite fun and I think now they would look MUCH better! =) If anyone knows of one PC game out, let me know. Would be nice to hear.
I dont know how many people played it, but those who did will call the game hard and well.. really odd.. as I said, you had a story unfold in different rooms, however to watch them, you would not have to trap anyone, and soon would just lose. So you kinda had to play this game over and over, which was sad. More a reason why I liked double switch more, was more movie vs having to trap them. Highly recommend anyone to try either game as it is quite addicting for awhile.. least till you get tired of losing lol. (Stupid having to wait for the RIGHT moment to spring a trap, otherwise you miss it)
Edit: How could I forget this game! Something that brings back MORE then just memories of a game, but the actual series itself! Power Rangers! (Season 1)
Geez, back then, when Power rangers was big, this game was FUN! It played like "Time Gal" where all you did was watch and press the button it told you to at the RIGHT time. Otherwise your "hp" bar would drop and if you messed up too many times, game over. This game, well, if you were to play it today.. which I have done, it will give you a speedy recap of the ORIGINAL power rangers! Green Ranger and all. Which THAT was nice! So if you ever wanted to remember some of the REAL series and movie clips from that, this is what you would get, where you press a button that resembled the scene. Fun part was.. you HAD to choose "hardest" game setting to get past and see more. Now the game itself sucked, I mean you really just pushed a button that it told you, but that isnt why people played this game. People played this to rewatch the series itself! Which it was very decent recap if you remember most of it. =) I know I enjoyed this game very much and play it sometimes if I need to recap things to someone.. since then I have ahem.. acquired the seasons from TV already, I got up to Season 3.. which is all I needed. White Ranger all I needed. Tommy was the best! WOOT! ^_^v (That and Billy.. I loved geeky nerds who could speak tech hehe..)
Whew.. ok, that should cover the most of the mains.. sigh.. I do know I think I saw some actors from movies in the games, which alone was a nice touch. Also just to have a "console" that did MOVIES was WHOA!!!!! Now if you were to load it, everyone would think it looks too simple and move to a better game. This is true today, but for a classic retro, there is alot of memories here to relive and well, it did help set the standards for todays games. I mean if not for the CD console age, where would we be now....? Thats right, still huffing on NES type cartridges. =p
Whew.. anyways, what do you remember most about these games? ANything major or fun? Or turn offs? =)
