Fans of the eccentric RPG series Earthbound (Mother in Japan) have been patiently waiting ten years for the third installment. The sequel was originally meant to arrive on the Nintendo 64 before it was moved onto the failed Nintendo 64 disk drive add-on and eventually cancelled when GameCube was just around the corner.
Those patient cheerleaders are about to get their due when Nintendo releases Mother 3 for GBA in Japan on April 20th. The official website for the next installment has opened and promises more information will be released soon, likely in the next day or so. To date, there's been little released about the game - no screen shots, no gameplay details, nothing.
"Once the release date is set, there are no more additions of new specs or anything like that. We'll no longer be able to fiddle around with anything in the game, unless it's something especially important," said series creator Shigesato Itoi on his blog, translated by Earthbound fans at Starmen.net. "It makes me a little sad, but I can't be selfish."
There hasn't been any word from Nintendo on whether we'll see the Mother 1 + 2 bundle already released overseas in Japan, but it'd certainly be a nice surprise to see the company help the GBA go out with a bang and bring all three games over. If there ever was a time to start crossing your fingers, it's now.
