Default *Guide* PS2 LED Mod

DISCLAIMER
I and QJ.net accept no responsibility for any damage or loss incurred to yourself, your PS2 or any other equipment/people used following this guide.

Please Note

If you follow this guide you will no longer be able to use a hard drive inside your PS2. By following this guide you will have to open your PS2 which will void your warranty, meaning if you mess it up then Sony will NOT fix/replace your PS2. Do not attempt this if you are likely to get the shakes from excitement. It is also advisable to have a flat CLEAN working surface. This guide only applies to the older big PS2's and is based on mine which is a UK model SCPH-30003R. I am assuming they are all similar though.

This guide will show you how to put an LED into your PS2 the simplest way possible (I have only put in one but there is nothing to stop you putting more in). It requires no soldering (provided your LED already has the wires soldered on) or technical know how whatsoever. All that is required is the ability to operate a screwdriver. Also while you have the case open you may want to do a bit of housekeeping on the inside of your PS2 as it is no doubt incredibly dusty as mine was.

Due to restrictions on QJ.net I cannot include the images in this guide. To get the full guide with the pictures please download the word document at the end of the guide.

Tools Needed

A Philips (cross) Head Screwdriver
A Knife or Penknife
LED(s)
Needle Nose pliers (Optional)
Compressed Air (Optional for housekeeping)

Also useful is a container to hold the screws that you remove.

image

Once you have your tools together its time to get started.

First you will need to remove the Network Adaptor on the back of your PS2 (if you have one). And also unplug everything from the console if you hadn't already.

image

This is the inside of my PS2 showing the LED that is already in place inside the expansion bay.

image

Next step is to remove the warranty seal. You can peel it off carefully, rip it off like Christmas wrapping or cut along the gaps in the case (I chose this method).

image

It's time to start disassembling your PS2. Turn the console over so that the base is facing up. Carefully prise out the 8 screw covers using the knife. Next you need to remove the screws that were under these covers.

image

Remember which screws came from which hole as they are different sizes.

image

Now turn the PS2 back so that it is the correct way up. To remove the cover you need to (CAREFULLY) pull the cover up from the back. You will need to do it at a slight angle to clear the DVD tray and controller ports. Don't pull it too far away from the console as there is a delicate ribbon wire going to the power and eject buttons.

image

The power and reset buttons need to be removed very carefully by sliding the knife underneath (as the arrow does) until they free themselves from the case.

Once you have these free from the case you can remove the top cover and put it to one side. You are done with it for now.

Now looking as the PS2 you will see the DVD drive on one side and the Heatsink on the other.

image

You need to remove the 4 circled screws. 2 by the controller ports and 2 by the power connector. Once you have removed the 2 controller port screws the actual controller ports need to be removed. Pull them up gently and remove the ribbon cable from the underside. The cable should come out fairly easily just by pulling on it gently. Put the controller ports somewhere safe. I put them inside the top cover that was removed earlier.

Now focus on the other 2 screws by the power connector and fan. The power connector can be pulled up and hung over the side of the console (there is no need to completely remove this) now pull up on the piece of plastic that now just holds the fan. It should come away quite easily.

Your console should now look something like this:

image

At this point the DVD drive can be removed however it is very fiddly to refit due to the lack of accessibility to the ribbon cables, so for simplicity's sake we are going to leave it as it is.

Now we can remove the whole console as it is from inside the case. To do this I put my hand inside the expansion bay and pull up carefully from the back again. It needs to be at an angle again to clear the USB ports that stick out the front slightly.

image

At this point it would be advisable to put some newspaper down to protect your PS2 and also the table from scratches.

Once removed you can put the bottom of the case to the side with the top half and controller ports. Please be careful with the fan as it is not easily removable as the connector is not accessible and the wires are extraordinarily thin. Place the PS2 upside down (see why the newspaper is sensible to cushion it slightly and stop the heatsink scratching your table).

Now that the PS2 is completely naked you can remove the power connector from the Circuit Board.

image

Next there are another 4 screws to remove (I hope your remembering where they all go because I'm not).

image

Remove the four circled screws and gently pull this circuit board away. This is the power supply circuit board (you know the huge box that sits outside the 360 well this is the PS2 equivalent). Once this is removed place it on the table with the components facing up.

That’s it disassembly finished. It's now time to add the LED(s).

On the power supply there is a small white connector with four holes in on one of the corners. This is where the LED will be wired in.

image

You can see I have labelled the positive and negative connectors. You need to feed the positive and negative wires from your LED into these holes. This can be seen below

image

Now you can test if this will work but it is very risky because you will be running 230V through an exposed circuit board. If you are willing to take this risk then you need to connect the power socket back up to this board and plug it into the mains, then turn the switch on and the LED should light. If not then try swapping the wires over, when you turn the power back off and unplug it again the LED should stay lit for about a second then dim out. This is because the capacitor on the circuit board is holding the power. Once the LED has gone off it is safe to touch the circuit board again as the power has all been drained.

Make sure that your new LED wires stay connected when you push the power supply circuit board back onto the main part of the console. The four prongs may need to be pushed in a little harder than when they were first removed.

image

There is a hole in the metal frame that you should feed the LED through into the Expansion bay.

image

Now that you have the LED in place you can reassemble the console. This is the exact opposite of disassembly. I won't go into too much detail. But I will highlight some important points.

Remember to reconnect the Power Connector before putting the console back in the case.

Remember to Angle the console when putting it back into the case the same as when you removed it.

Remember to angle the top cover when refitting it.

Most of all BE CAREFUL. Take your time. Do not rush or force anything. If your having trouble leave it, have a break and come back.

If you really can't do it then post here. If I don't get back to you within 24 hours then PM me.

The full guide with pictures in a Word Document can be downloaded from here

Many thanks to Billy Talent for hosting the file.

Hey Phil, I'm gonna go ahead and rehost the file on my Filefront account, the current place you have it is painfully slow.

Oh and by the way...Awesome guide!

Here's the link.

http://files.filefront.com/PS2_LED_M.../fileinfo.html

Maybe if I'm bored later I'll convert it to PDF, cause I don't have Word.

cheers buddy. i thought about converting to pdf so that people can't alter it and cos acrobats free so everyone can definitely view it. But I couldn't be bothered after I'd spent 3 hours ripping apart my PS2 and then writing the guide.

I got an error about the file being corrupt when opening directly from FileFront. Can someone doublecheck?

phil, why cant you use an hdd after this? if i were to do this and create some slack w. the wire and lay it in the corner of the harddrive encasing, then id be able to fit my harddrive in there as its physically quite small.... and im not that excited about ps2 LED. i just checked if you could change the green/red and blue lights ont he 2 buttons on the ps2 and you cant do it easily.

If you can get hold of some SMT LEDs then you can.

And yeah you can use a HDD after doing this as I have since. I only said that at the time as the HDD bay is where the LEDs go in this tutorial. I wrote this ages ago and have much improved my PS2 since. Mainly by buying a soldering iron and wiring in LEDs so they don't leach power away from everything. Now I draw power from the USB ports. Of course wedging wires between 2 connections is much easier tho

Wire them up in parallel. Here is a very basic example of how to do it:

Replace the battery with the two connection on the PS2 and the bulbs with the LEDs. The LEDs must all be the same way round (longer legs all the same side).

Also for a safer supply of power I would suggest the outer two contacts on the USB ports, I havent bothered to alter the guide as I've had no problems with the original method for over a year.

Why does this stop you being able to use a hard drive inside your PS2?
EDIT: Nevermind...
But why bother with this, you can just put a hard drive in then have that orange led that is to the left of it.

Blue > Orange

And I've taken my PS2 much further than this guide covers now. It has a HDD in and the LEDs are all around the other side shining out the front and back.
