yeah sorry meant to say your xbox will be banned. not your account. i think there are certain ways of modding it without it being detected. Research the audio exploit cos the font exploit replaces the dash on boot so its always there. whereas the audio exploit loads the standard xbox dash then a button combination loads your custom dash.

You can get certain modships, that u can turn on and off on the front of the xbox, and turn on when you want to play 'legal backed up game isos' or turn off when you want to go on the internet to play xbox live with your legal game discs.

Also, on the subject of softmodding, my uncle (the resident xbox modder of the family) has a cd(or dvd?) that you put in, and it loads the .xbe of the cd(or dvd?) and loads like a game would, but the 'game' softmods your xbox

As far as i know only the UXE softmod doesnt ban you from live, other soft mods can get you banned from live.
Lets put it simple ;

With the UXE softmod:
When them mod is one it stops you from connection with live.
When the mod is off it lets you connect to live

With hardmod :
I depends on the BIOS. With the x2.6 bios it acts just like
the softmod. When on it stops you from connecting to live.

Games to softmod with are MECHASSULT,007,SPLINTER CELL. Now they have be the original ver. but i hear that their is a # on 007 that tells you if a platinium ver will work.

Also a warning you may get your orignal xboxdash.xbe deleted with the softmod. A mod chip is better if you want to swap hdd since its easier. Plus you can fix files on the hdd. Like you deleted something you shouldn't have and the xbox wont boot.

I don't want to switch HDD's or anything. I mostly just want to use XBMC. Maybe some homebrew, but nothing else really.

It easier if you just softmod since you dont have to open your xbox. So buy the game and get ar. Go to xbins and in the exploits section get the UXE softmod. unzip it and add save2 to your ar. Then copy over that save to the xbox. Run the save and choose the nk.06 option(its the 1st one) then chose the EVOX dash. and your good.
You get all homebrew from xbins. So you need an ftp app like flashfxp(i have a crack ver. since its only a 30 day free trail. and you need mirc.

I opened my Xbox and did the hotswap method to install the UXE softmod. I can see why you'd want to not open it (warranty) and why you'd want to keep it with the 8gb hard drive (you can just stream media from a server using XBMC, anyway) - I, however, am an ISO-driven sort of person, and streaming the games from my brother's server causes an assload of lag in other places. :/

You need a HDD that can lock. So if your hdd cant lock you dont want to swap out of the 8gb one.

Well, I do have a 40 GB HDD, but I don't know if it "locks". I don't mind doing it, I'm just trying to find the easy method. I'd do the HDD swap though.

Most new hdds lock, the one i had was from 1999 and a 30gb a maxtor and it didn't lock. Just try and see if it locks. I think i did see a list somewhere with a list of hdds that locked but it didnt have EVERY model.

Ya. Funny thing is that what they call it "marrying" when you connect to live they marry the eeprom to the hdd serial and send that info to xbl servers. So when you get banned for having a modded xbox ( not modding) they ban both the eeprom and the hdd.

Well, Actually the HDD I have is the official Sony PS2 HDD (without the metal brackets on the sides)...

Do you know if that one would work?

My CD drive is a Phillips. Apparently that doesn't read CD-r's. Would I have to install a new CD Drive for all of this to be worth while?
