I'm going to buy a PVR soon and I need a program that would allow me to record shows onto my hard drive. Since SageTV and BeyondTV are both close to $100 I would like to ask if anyone knows any products that are cheaper. Also if anyone has any experience with either of the programs I would like to ask which is better and if it is worth the price.

GBPVR or MediaPortal are both freeware PVR.

If you are using it soley as a PVR, then perhaps you could install a linux distro then install MythTV http://www.mythtv.org/
However that means you lose the ability to play some windows games, but if your PVR can't handle them then I suggest going the linux route.
