Default hard drive failure

Titles says it. I only had one 320gb in my main comp, held all my music, movies, OS, etc.

It's detected by the BIOS, but S.M.A.R.T says the hard drive is bad and needs to be replaced. When I try to boot from it it says a system file (NTFS.sys) is corrupt, and it doesn't get any further.

But I think the files are intact, because a disk checkup was running through applications and files (checking them for errors), so they are there. System repair doesn't work-it says the hard drive is bad. I can do system restores though, but that doens't do anything if I can't boot up.
^^All that was done from the Windows Vista install disk

So what can I do? Would it work to get another 320gb, install and OS, and rescue the files that I need?
Or do I need to go to a data recovery place?

This was. a 7200.10 Perpendicular Recording. I know they have a history of failing, but not when I got it.

I think installing another OS on another hard drive and trying to rescue the files may be the best option.

Whats wrong with perpendicular recording?

Nothing. I hope. I think the 7200.10 series is the first commercially available PR Hard Drive, and the series has been pretty unreliable. So ya never know.

And I have a 1gb thumb drive-how would I go about getting DSL or something onto it? I tried before but it said "There was an error in starting the OS" or something.

EDIT: Oh, and a 40gb hard drive. but I have over 80 gb of files, so...yeah.

But it doesn't fix the fact that the drive is broken.

With your USB booting issue, ask for help here.

Ubuntu has ntfs support on there live cd. Get a exturnal drive and copy over the files or just make a copy of the partition then buy a new HDD and copy over the partition and you sould be all set.

Pretty much every OS outside of Vista can be booted off a flash drive.
