Default Windows restarts at Start Menu! PLEASE HELP!

hi, my friend's computer is running Windows Media Edition. his computer restart in the START MENU, (the page where it display Windows media edition)

how do we fix this? what can we do in safe mode that will help?

try booting into safe mode and reverting to an old system restore point

Also, for a little more clarification on the issue, what operating system is it? No such 'Media Edition' exists. There is Windows XP Media Center, which is the most likely for it to be, but it could also be Windows ME (Millenium edition). Please clarify so that we can help you further.
