nVidia 8800GTS 320Mb (or 640Mb if you have a big monitor)

ATIs R600 stuff can't even compare.

Definitely a nVidia 8 Series; DX10 and AMAZING graphics. I'd go with the 8500GT or higher.

Pope, your a mod now! Good for you (or isn't it lol?)! I got a 22" HDTV/Monitor recently, so you recommend the 640mb for that, to be honest thats the card I was looking at but the money... I've got it but have other expenses.

Yes. NVidia for sure. I've got a 8600 right now, works fantastic
But as I hear, the newly released 2900 from ATI works very well for a lower price than the comparable NVidia card. So if you want top of the line, get NVidia, if you just need good and cheap, get the new ATI card (2900).

At 22", the 320Mb version will be fine. 24" is when it starts to demand more memory.
Also ATI do not have good price/performance ratios right now. Also if you do go down the ATI route, make sure you have a decent power supply because the ATI cards suck a lot of power and run very hot compared to nVidia counterparts.

appreciate that pope, I'm feeling doubtful and think I should still go for the 640mb however. Also, what company would you recommend, my last nvidia chip was a BFG, which I liked (although I was very near replacing it today cos it could've been buggered). Round the time I got that card (it was a 6800OS OC) I was told ATI had the upperhand.

My only other concern to be honest is running Linux. Although my machine is running Ubuntu/Kubuntu perfectly fine, I've noticed many problems in the past (at my office and uni etc) with Linux (or at least Ubuntu editions) and support with Nvidia, what do you think?

I don't have any experience personally but nVidia has the upper hand in linux nowadays, although I think currently no DX10 cards will work under linux. I am willing to bet nVidia will probably get it working first however.

Ok, well I mainly use Linux on my notebook and my desktop should be fine. I got a new Athlon X2 64bit dual 6000 or whatever (it was meant to be my brother's, long story) and I also have other parts. Just gonna find the last bits to finish off the new build and this is the question that came to mind (see title of thread). Well it's an ongoing battle anyway.

Appreciate and wish to thank all those who helped and contributed, especially you Pope.

And in a landslide of 8 to 1...

I buy XFX Nvidia cards. They've been good to me.

That's what raised this question. My Processor recommends ATI!
