Is it a good graphics card? The one I'm looking at is the 512MB version and will be run in a machine with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 CPU and 4GB of RAM.

I have the 8500 myself, and I can tell you that is very very good. So the 8600 is even better

Extra note for best settings: Download and run nTune when you have the card installed to safely overclock your Processor and video card.

i haev the 7600, and the only game it cant max out is fear, but med high specs if fine for me

Well, Pope said the 8500 was more of a media centre card and I'm going to take his advice and go for the 8600GTS. A little more in price, but the performance will make up for that, I'm sure.

Awesome. It's probably the best value for money right now. The 8600 and 8500 series didn't really perform as well as expected. The extra money spent going from 8600 GTS to an 8800 GTS is very noticable.

my friend has that card, it heats up like no ones business, make sure you have a good cooling system.

no, u just have to make sure your mobo has the slot for ur graphics card to go into, which is probably a pci-e 16x slot

it depends on ur other specs, but assuming they are all decent i would guess high 30s for low speeds and high 50s for high speeds

How about you google "8600 GTS benchmarks"?
Seriosly, the easiest thing to research when it comes to PC components are graphics cards, the benchmarks couldn't be clearer.

btw you can dramatically increase the fps than what is said in that benchmark by reducing the screen size to 1024x768, and 8x or 4x, instead of 16x. The quality will not suffer as much as the speed will increase, because in general those are pretty high specs for such a power consuming game.

i have the eVGA 8600GTS 256mb card on a pc i built last night on a 19" widescreen monitor...and it runs all the games that ive tried maxed out. Ive played halo 2, flight simulator x, and graw...so i think the 512mb 8600 will work out great...

Whoa whoa whoa slow down, NO an 8600gts will NOT max out all current games, it is a great value for $ card, and I have my eyes on it but dont expect it to max everything out like im hearing so much on this thread. It is powerfull, but what is your budget man? Do you plan on DX10? If so it definatly wont be maxing out bioshock crysis call of juriez and lost planet, but before I write those words in stone whats the rest of your rig composed of man, and what is your 19' lcd's native res?

he has the 256 version, i couldnt expect that to run nearly as smooth or as well as a 512 version. my comments are describing 2 diff cards so they are unrelated and cannot be compared.
