Default ~~¿How can I tell if I have USB 2.0?~~

Hello, I am new to this section of the forum and I was wondering how to tell what version of USB is on my computer's hardware. I need to know because I want to buy an external hard drive and some of them work only with USB 2.0. Please tell me how to check I have searched everywhere!

Plug in a USB 2.0 device such as a flash drive and if Windows warns you that the device can operate faster then its not a USB 2.0 slot

A 2.0 usb plugin wire looks different from normal USB wire, the head is a little bit thicker even though the metal looks the same. The wire that comes with the psp or normaly is not a 2.0 usb wire.

The PSP wire is 2.0 right?

On my old pc, i'd get the "Device isnt running as fast as it could, plug into USB 2.0 slot".

But on my new pc, i dont get the message at all..

Really? I have this weird USB wire with 3 ends, one is the normal USB 1.0 that goes into digital cameras,psp....other devices. And the other two ends go into the computer, except one of the heads in bigger than the other...

You don't need to have a usb 2.0 device to see if you have one or not. Do like Freeplay said look in Device Manager.

Then what do you make of this? Why does it have two ends that go into the PC.

Spoiler for I'm saving screen space:
It must be something related to power. I say this because you can run multiple devices off of one USB port (I believe it's something like 128, but don't quote me on that). Anyways, the only reason to have two plugs is that it powers some external device.

To find out which version you have, open the Device Manager by right-clicking My Computer and choosing Properties (or with Windows key + Pause/Break on the keyboard). Click the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager. Scroll down until you locate the Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand the list of controllers. If you have a USB 2.0 controller in your computer, the word Enhanced will be listed somewhere in one of those names.

In the case of the Intel motherboard I have installed on one of my machines, it says both USB2 and Enhanced as you can see in the graphic below.

In other cases, the word Enhanced will appear without any reference to USB2 or USB 2.0. If it says Enhanced, it doesn't matter what additional details are included along with it.

It's also important to make sure you know which USB ports on your computer are connected to the USB 2.0 transfer bus. I have a computer with USB ports on the front which interface with USB 1.1 and transfer data slowly compared to the USB ports on the back of the computer, which are USB 2.0.

Hope this helps!

~Sullivan~

Ok...that kind of makes sense since it came with a harddrive enclosure...

If the enclosure doesn't have a power plug, then one plug is exclusively for data, and the other for power.

But it works with either one in...? And with only one...never tried pluging in both of at the same time but I've cycled through 3 different hard drives and they only required one USB plug plugged in to work.

If you bought your computer in the last couple years then you have USB 2.0, and if you don't you will know.
