Default [Help] Windows Vista - Internet Problems - Disconnects..this time for good

Alright my roomate is having a problem, I've tried all the standard repair methods that would usually fix the problem (a simple restart has always fixed the problem) - Vista randomly disconnects us from the internet - although our AIM (I use trillian tho) still remains running - leading me to belive it is a port issue. However, we are on a college campus...no access to changing ports...

Just today his internet crapped out on him, it is not the internet connection but rather his computer (we've tried another connection, mine which works and it was a no-go). Any ideas?

hmmm seems to have happened to me today for about 20 mins where only my comp (Vista) couldnt connect to my internet. After tweaking and playing around with the network settings, it just worked. So try reinstalling network drivers or fiddle around with network settings

Yeah I'm about to do that but it's his computer not mine, I'll attack it when he's not working on it

Edit: I'm hoping it's not the problem these guys are facing (sounds like it though) - http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vi...nt-ping-4.html

hey, that was exactly what happened with me. My IPv6 had a problem since i flushed my DNS cache and is now limited, but apparently my comp connects to the internet via IPv4. Things i did to make it work was:
1. tried to diagnose and fix
2. set manual ip and then set back to automatic
3. disabled connection, re-enable

Sadly that did not work, although his network driver is out of date, so maybe an update to that might help - although it's a new computer so there is probably no new update for that neways

I had this problem... your not going to like this, but the only fix I found was installing XP. Of course there probably is a fix, but I didn't have the time nor the patience to find it.

I take it you live in a different flat/apartment/etc.? If not, you could buy a wireless adapter for both computers (if they don't already have them) and bridge your connection.

Try to remove net card from add/remowe hardware menu, but do not forget to write down settings(gate, mask, IP - if not dynamic)
Win is supposed to reinstall drivers after restart. Cos it seems to be like drivers problem.
Ooo and check firewall as well, just in case.

GTFO. Anyway... The same happened to me, VERY recently. I had to use System Restore to get my internet working again.

I used to have these problems all the time.....

But it was a easy fix....After the modem and router restarted failed I would unplug my computer connect to my 2ed HDD that had osx86 or a linux distro lanuch firefox and internet would work then I would just load vista back on and it would work..So try out a live cd and see if internet works via there....THen retry on vista..

We can't reset modems/routers up in a college :/ It's a direct connection, and it will definetely work via a LiveCD however I don't think running that and then returning would fix it, that's kind of random. It's too late now though since my roomate is having his dad reformat it for him, that will definetely fix it.
