Default Maximum Security

I came here because of DJKPSP, willing to ask an important question. Him and I have a home network, and I would like to connect my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000) to the network. But first off, my Compaq needs to be secure. And I mean really, really secure. See, I have files on this thing that can be found nowhere else at all, important stuff, and rare files. None of it can be lost, and no place to back it up. What is the best way to save it? I don't mind dumping a hundred programs on here, I've got more than enough space. But this is a gentle computer, for it has never connected to the internet.

Like files I'll never be able to retrieve again; such as rare music and stuff I've worked hard on (I'm a PSP developer) Now I've come to say that so far my laptop has been on the shutdown screen for... get ready for this... 11 HOURS. It has 3 updates to do, and I'm calling this a record. I guess it is installing Windows Service Pack 3.
