It can be a bad sector on the hard drive as well. At work i recently tryed to fix a computer that came up with the blue screen evreytime it booted up but it did boot up in safe mode but a replacement of the hard drive fixed it.

Try these things in order and after evreysingle step check your windows:

Do a check disk

Do a RAM test (If RAM contains bad sectors replace RAM)

Do a Hard Drive test (If hard drive turns up with bad sectors replace hard drive)

If there is nothing wrong with the RAM and Hard drive then i suggest a repair of XP or a Full repair and reinstallion.

Hope that helps.

Well what happened was I wanted to boot into safe mode to get into recovery mode. Because everytime I try to restore to a previous restore date it is unsucessful, but in the past when I went into safe mode and then I tried to recover, it would. But this time it always froze up on me, so I went into msconfig, and made it so the pc booted into safe mode, thinking it would fix the problem of the computer freezing. So I boot it up and it freezes, so I am like damn. My plan didn't work.
The mouse will not move, I cannot use the arrow keys on the keyboard to choose a user.

I want to fix it without my dads help, as I always do with my pc.
If I insert the XP Pro, installer disc, can I make it so it install windows defult files and settings without formatting the harddrive and keeping the users data and account intact?

I am at school right now, I have another pc in the house to check in on this.
Thanks guys for you info so far, and I am positive my pc has no viruses, I just scanned for viruses, malware, and adware a few days ago.

Yes you can when you start up the xp install disk go into install windows xp which is usually pressing enter then accept the terms of agreement (F8) then press R which should be the "Repair the selected windows XP installation" and then just follow the instructions.

Remember you want to go into install windows xp not the recovery console unlike you may think.

Yes as long as you do what i say it won't but just remember it might not fix your problem which may be a hardware issue.

does your comp run vista?
mine does, and yesterday, for some ungodly reason, programs started failing as soon as i started any and the system was becoming very sluggish. so i rebooted, or "tried to" rather. i could not login. said "loginui.exe committed an illegal operation".

at startup theres an option for me to restore the system, but (this really began to piss me off) it said there were no restore points. i had no choice but to completely reformat back to how it was when i first bought the thing. still havent recovered all i lost and i'll never get those phucking college papers back. (i dont have a need for them but i'm screwed if for some reason i do later)

a friend of mine and his father, who are both very "computer literate", guessed it may have been a trojan.

which is why you partition your drives smartly and when it does happen, you only have to wipe the partition with the OS on it

OR

Dual boot another OS so that you can retrieve your files

OR

Use a Live version of Linux, such as Ubuntu, and retrieve it, back up, and reformat

Before taking any extreme measures I would try booting up into an alternate OS (Linux Live CD) and see if you can see your Windows harddrive and backup your files. Sometimes computers just crap out, and that seems to be a possible reason here (bad HDD).

There should've been that repair option somewhere along the line as well....Just did some research and apparantly that option isn't always there..werid

You guys know that MSCONFIG, command you run from the RUN part on the start menu.
If I boot an Alt. OS, could I edit the file that make the computers boot differently. If I can get in and edit the file I could make the pc boot into another mode (normal not safe mode.)

This wouldn't matter. It is defently your hard drive. Just get a Linux live CD like ubuntu and back up your hard drive and then test your hard drive with a HDD tester. After that see the problem and then see if you need to replace your HDD or just to reinstall windows.
