Is the RAM secure? Did you force it in? If so you might have broken the pins. If you are sure you got the right type of RAM, is it in the right slots?

Is it shown that you have extra RAM in your Sys Info (right click My Computer>Properties)?

So it shows you have installed the RAM fine, but doesn't work?

try this:

The computer is a HP Pavillion a1132n. Slot 1 has 512, slot 2 has 512 and I placed the new 1g in the slot 3.

So it's 1 stick of 1 GB? Yes it probably does matter.

Edit: Try taking the 2 x 512 out and see if 1gb works on its own.

I'll try that

EDIT: Tried the one stick of ram and the system does not work properly. Does the ram in a HP Pavillion have to be replaced in pairs or can there be an odd number of sticks in place?

That might be the problem Sometimes ram can act very strange or slower if put with RAM sticks that are different. I suggest taking it back.
