Default Drive not reading DVD's

I recently did a clean install of xp pro 32bit. I installed all drivers i could think of...but now xp doesn't recognize dvd's. I backed up some stuff onto them and now i can't recover them. I think i've had this problem before but really can't remember what I did. I made sure the ide cable is in my mobo correctly, and its getting power. any ideas?
