Question Help. No start menu, cant copy/paste, No sound after partition then scandisk.

Hey all, All I did was shrink my ntfs partition to give more space to ubuntu ext3 partition. After I did that, things worked ok. However did have a odd error after the partition was done, so I did a scandisk/chkdisk thing which would reboot the PC and do its thing. It did this whole resetting security index thing to default on every single file. After it rebooted, thats when the issues started. I have no start bar it seems, cant copy and paste, Norton isnt loading, plus a couple other programs in start up. I have no sound it seems. I tried going to safe mode, same issues.

I try to install a program and it either doesnt load up or it lingers in limbo. IE loads then closes. Firefox still works at least and thank god FFXI runs.

Anyways, before I try the whole restore thing... which would be a pain in the ass to have to reinstall >.<

Anyone have any ideas that could be causing the problems after such a move and scan?

Oddly enough, this happened to me. I did a system restore like Andy suggested and the problem was fixed.

Your position is entirely different though, I hadn't touched any partitions.

I'd suggest backing up your important data and reinstalling XP.

It's funny, it does waste HD space and slows the PC down - agreed, but it's funny how at times like this we need it most but we disabled it.

Seems like crucial system files were removed, try using the repair option with the Windows CD (although that option doesn't always come up oddly enough) - boot your sytem with the disc in the try and boot off of the disk - you might be able to repair the system files

Learn the hard way.
But yeah, I agree, before doing any full installs try recovering the files that were lost (if they were lost).
