Would a little dust on the heatsink make the cpu go on a fritz?

It could certainly make it heat up, but 137C? That's damn crazy. Open it up, clean it all out thoroughly, and get some of that stuff that comes in the syringe that goes between the heatsink and the CPU. It's not overclocked, is it?

I used to keep it overclocked all the time, but I havent had it overclocked for almost 3 months. For my processor, 70c is concidered overheating. Ill clean it out tonight and post the changes. Thanks.

I'd say a CPU at 137 C would burn the dust anyway

How long have you had the PC? And the syringe kit would probably help:

It could be a faulty temperature reading. If you've got any sort of digital thermometer, have a go at measuring it while it's reporting speeds like that and see if it's actually at that temperature.

I have 2 programs that watch the temperature, and it shows me in the bios. Every time the computer shuts down due to overheat, I have checked the bios hardware moniter and that also shows high temp. Could they all be wrong?

This is my outdated processor. (If you can recommend a new top of the line processor, feel free too.)

http://products.amd.com/en-us/Deskto...ail.aspx?id=47

My mobo. http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1...81&modelmenu=2

My video card. (Same as processor)

http://www.ozone3d.net/gpu/asus_8600gt_silent.php

So I have been looking at some of these beasty heatsinks on this site.
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products

Would something like this http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/pro...asus-triton-79 be worth the money?

Well, there's a chance they'd all be using the same temperature sensor, but I'm not sure about the way it works so I could be wrong. If you open your case when it's on and reading around what you said - it should be noticeable how boiling hot it is from just being next to the case if it's reading the right temperature.

what if you touch it with your hand and if your hand dosent catch on fire than you have faulty sensors.

make sure the heatsink and fan is seated properly. Before i found out mine wasn't, my computer would crash consistently.
