If you have more than one graphics card, then it might be that the signal is being sent to the other video port.

No. I should have been more specific it has only stopped working during the last few days and I only have one graphics card. I have not changed anything in the last few days either.

I really appreciate you trying to help but in my first post I stated that it doesn't go to the windows desktop it is just a black screen with the startup sound.

Completely nothing just a black screen after chkdsk. I have also tested it on two monitors with 2 different VGA cables.

I've tried safe mode and have waited for over 10 minutes and all it does is says it's loading things and then just freezes like that.

Safe mode just worked. I'm running an AVG scan through safe mode and it says a few DLL files from C:\WINDOWS have been changed so hopefully AVG can pickup any viruses.

open cmd, put a copy of winxp in the cd drive and type sfc /scannow
Reboot, enjoy.

Yes, I have ran system restore twice now and nothing happens.

I just tried booting up in VGA mode and it worked but a lot of messages keep popping up saying files are corrupt in certain places.
