What do you plan to do on it and how much are you willing to spend? How portable do you need it to be? How much battery life? Which games are you going to play? That should help us find a good laptop...

as lightweight as possible
prefer at least 5hr batt
I will spend a bit of time in photoshop/dreamweaver/firefox/audacity(possibly simultaneously, which might be more system intensive than some games)
$ is irrelivant, but i don't want ripped off.

How big do you want the screen to be? 13"-14" is usually consider an ultraportable. Are you going to play any games on it? Let's start off with this, it's the best ultraportable you'll find with a video card that you could actually game on:
http://ae.lge.com/products/model/detail/p300.jhtml#

It's also the only true ultraportable you'll find with a discrete card (which is a really good card, the 8600M GT).

i would prefer a 15-17 in screen. I've never been much of a pc gamer(but thats because my system has always sucked too much, so i might start) but I may decide on Crysis or something absurd like that once i have a good system.
hows this?
DISPLAY LCD: 17.1 inch TFT LCD Display (Widescreen WUXGA 1920 x 1200 Pixels)
CPU: (Quad-Core)Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q6700 @ 2.66GHz 1066FSB 8MB L2 Cache 64-bit
MOTHERBOARD: Intel P965 + ICH-8R Chipset Mainboard
MEMORY: 4GB (2x2GB) PC5300 DDR2-667 SODIMM Memory (Corsair or Major Brand)
VIDEO CARD: Built-in NVIDIA Video (Dual NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800 GTX MXM GDDR3 512MB PCI-E Video - SLI Mode)
HARD DRIVE: 200GB 7200RPM SATA150 HARD DRIVE
OPTICAL DRIVE: DVD Optical Drive (8X DVD Rewritable Drive)
SOUND: BUILT-IN AC 97 SOUND

They sell the same system here for cheaper (that's actually designed by Clevo, it's just built and rebranded by a few companies):
http://xoticpc.com/

That thing is huge! It's so big it could be considered a desktop (2.4" thick and it's 12 pounds). It uses a desktop CPU (which is a stupid idea because of how big it makes the notebook) plus mobile video cards. It'll perform like a beast, but for the price and size, you'd be better off with a desktop. Didn't you say you wanted it as lightweight as possible...? If you want that laptop, get it rebranded and designed from Voodoo (since you have a ****load of money to spend). They truly make every laptop unique and amazingly built. I know a few people that have Voodoos and they love the customer service they get (you get a direct number to the company's CEO) plus the few events every year that make owning a Voodoo a unique experience.
http://www.voodoopc.com/system/Notebook.aspx

The Envy H:171 is the same thing as that Clevo you posted. The M:173 is a lot more portable, though. Again, since you have a ton of money to spend on a luxury computer, Voodoo is as luxurious as they get.

You can overclock the X9000 quite a lot to get faster speeds. Also check out the Alienware m15x, the ultimate gaming notebook that's still a notebook:

Well, he has an insane amount of money coming his way and he wants a notebook. Notebooks that support Extreme processors can support overclocking just fine. I wouldn't spend $800~ more for an Extreme processor, but if I was getting money from a record deal, I'd go crazy. It's one of those things that's just cool to have.

Knifey - Not the best windows notebook every made..that was pure BS

As far as a good laptop...never buy from Cyberpower or other no-name brands. They are not as reliable as the big companies such as HP, Dell, Sony or Apple. You say you would like something in the 15.4-17 range. The 17" range will bring you into the territory of desktop replacements which mean - very heavy and overheating could be a big issue. It's not uncommon for laptops to overheat.

The one you looked at in Cyberpower is a rip-off, you can get one with a bigger screen (1900x1200 resolution), slightly slower processor (you don't need a quad on a laptop...cooling wouldn't be sufficient enough) from Dell - it's their XPS M1730 - configure it with dual core 2.4ghz, DUAL 8800M's (a bit unnecessary but would be a gaming monster...otherwise it's overkill if you aren't going to be gaming that much).

The bigger and badder your system, the more battery life that would be consumed (desktop replacements barely get over 3hrs of life).

Like I've said before, if you want to game...get a desktop, not a laptop.

Never said it was the best, I said one of the best. Besides I love that you dont have to go threw hurdles to find vista and xp drivers like you may with a lot of other laptops that come shipped with windows vista and have to spend a little while to track down the xp drivers...

If you want a good deal on laptops I always use http://www.xpbargains.com/best_deal....ptop_deals.htm to find more. Price may not be a issues but you do get more.

If you really dont care about price at all go with the Lenovo IdeaPad U110 ...

That 8400M GS will run games like Crysis horribly. You have the money, why not get a dual 8800M GTX with SLI? There's even a 20% off coupon going around so you can get a WUXGA 2.4GHz 8800M GTX 3GB RAM SLI rig for $2400, which is a great value in notebooks.

my biggest concern now is batt life, because it needs to get through 3 hrs of college classes w/o powering out. Im not sure if I'll game anyway, although I know I want to photoshop/dreamweaver/firefox/audacity simultaneously w/ minimal lag

The Alienware m15x with an 8800M GTX will get 3-4 hours of battery life if you enable BinaryGFX (switches to an integrated video card to save money when you don't need full power) and StealthMode. You can get 5-6+hours with those modes on plus you can swap out the optical drive with SmartBay and insert another battery, so you can run off of two batteries. It's the best portability/power trade-off you'll see on the market today. Plus it's only 1.3" thick and seven pounds.

Not to ruin your thing here but if you're going to use this for school and you won't be gaming, I would get a Mac.

Ya, if you're getting the Intel notebooks (Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air) you can install XP...but Leopard is a good os imo.
