If you've got decent cooling, quad. And right now i think at microcenter they have Q9450s for reaaallly cheap, like as much as the Q6700. At Fry's they also have Q6600s for like $180 or $170

Dual; runs cooler, uses less power, and has greater overclocking abilities.

He said he's not gonna overclock...but even so Q6600 and Q6700 can oc just as well as dual cores, if not better.

Go with the Quad core if you do not plan on overclocking. Without overclocking (on dual and/or Quad) the Quad out preforms that dual core. Just be sure you have adequate cooling. I have the Q6600 and since I got it from dell (shock ), they have a massive heatsink and fan for the CPU alone - although it keeps it extremely cool

I just got the Q6600, and I am very pleased with it.

It doesn't run that hot, just make sure that you get one with G0 stepping. Mine runs at about 38 C idle, 55 C under load. That's with the stock cooler too.

Im going dual core because I was told that the higher frequency is better, and that games might not use the other 2 cores.

Weather thats a right assumption tho,im not sure about

EDIT-

I want this one-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037

The 45nm thing has an advantage in heat, but does it outperform the Conroe?

EDIT2-

The Wolfdale also has 6 megs of L2 cache vs 4 megs on the Conroe, and for the 3.0ghz,the Wolfdale is only 10 dollars more. So if you do dual core,I'd suggest Wolfdale instead of conroe, but I'm not much of an expert

im really disappointed about my mobos inability to work with 45 nm chips, i really wanted the 84/8500 for my upgrade but obviously that didnt work out...
i think im gonna go witht he q6700 because i read about g0 stepping and how easy it would be to overclock to 3-3.3 ghz

You can do that on the q6600 as well. I just ordered one from newegg last week, and I received the G0 stepping model.

watch the price on the wolfdales (dual core 45nm)

the 3.00ghz (E8400) is $194.99
the 3.16ghz (E8500) is $269.99

do the math and the 166 mhz more of processor just isnt worth it

EDIT- on new egg

Why are you still talking about 45nm? Deturb already ruled them out. And of course those prices are there, it's NewEgg.
