I'm not sure about everybody else but I really don't fancy controlling everything by touch. A mouse and keyboard works fine. I like being able to see the screen without fingerprints.

Adiuvo - being the owner of an itouch, the multi-touch interface doesn't get used much and when it does..it works well. It's really only good for gestures (like zooming). It's nice when browsing with a smaller screen, makes things more personal and interactive.

While I say it's a good direction, I feel that the implentation will take time and will not be accepted at first. Tablet PC's haven't caught on very well and I do not even use the tablet capabilities of my laptop anymore, so why would I use multitouch?

Multitouch is good for manipulating items, other than that it is useless and would require us to buy more expensive hardware (we thought vista was making us dish out extra just for requirements and to take full advantage..but now an entirely new monitor or laptop may be required...)

You won't need a new monitor or laptop to run Windows 7, just to take advantage of its' touch controls. We were going to make the leap to touch-based computing eventually. In 2010 when Windows 7 comes out multitouch monitors won't cost too much. Adiuvo, we'll still use a keyboard and mouse, touch controls will just add a lot to the experience. Personally, I think it'll be cooler doing everything with touch controls, other than type or play most games.

I don't know about gaming with touch though. I don't wanna be moving my fingers across a wide screen monitor some feet away to frag a guy in frantic arena multiplayer.

I mean, imagine:

Dude 1: Dude, you cheated. I so had you.
Dude 2: Nuh uh - I touched first.
Dude 1: No way man. I touched YOU first.
Dude 2: You wish. I touched you first, and now you're dead.
Dude 1: No. See? I had my fingers over you when I fired. You cheated.
.
.
.

(...and more touching...and fingers...)

*shiver*

FPS games will still use a mouse and keyboard, but I could imagine some little "touch" additions for things like scoping and throwing grenades that would add a lot to the experience (which could still be controlled with a mouse/keyboard).

I'm well aware, hence why I said "full advantage". Also this will really only work well on laptops. I'm on a desktop right now and I'd hate to lean over the desk and touch the screen, it would be uncomfortable.

Multi-touch isn't that new.....

We had a touch screen HP that was able to do multi-touch.... Not that well, but for most thing's it worked well.

win7 doesnt seem like anything next gen to me. not even vista seemed that much different than xp. for me the only difference was the use of a sidebar, and less compatibility along with some graphical tweaks. the jump from ps2 to ps3 just in terms of os was excellent. sure they had a lot more time and it doesnt have to have near as many functions, but thats what feels next gen to me.

Windows 7 is Microsoft's main project. Even Vista was only meant to be a bridge for the long wait between XP and 7.
