I doubt anyone will actually find every single part for you and post it up on a forum..

If it's really your first time, maybe you should do some homework on it first. Like a book or something..
Building a PC for dumbings
http://www.amazon.com/Building-PC-Du.../dp/0764507826
Tom's Hardware Guide
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0789716860/$%7B0%7D

Haven't tried them myself, but they seem useful.

PS: Your not really dumb just because the book says it...

which is currently $504.29 USD

does he need stuff like monitor/speakers/keyobard/mouse/disc drives?

or is the 500 just for the main components?

*yawn*...no offense or anything but there are so many of these threads popping up everywhere...why don't you just look at someone elses, and compare? If they have a good setup and you like it, then you're done. Not trying to sound like a hypocrite cause i did this a while back too.

why not get a 8800

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103251
amd quad core (clocked .1 slower and has 2mb less memory) but it's a quad core.

if you do go amd you need a different motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...X2+%2f+Sempron

p.s. see if you can't find a discdrive and harddrive locally so you don't have pay shipping.

Bad move. Especially with the one you chose. Stick with an Intel CPU and switch the mobo and that pc will be fine.

Why are you so anti AMD, they are processors, if it processes things like it says it does, then you should be happy, I agree that Intel is better for OC'ing but I don't see anything wrong with AMD, you get what pay for.

Currently, Intel has the faster processors. Why would you spend your money on an inferior product?

I guess, but you'll probably regret it later. I'd say wait a few weeks, mow a few lawns or flip a few burgers, and go for the better processor.

well everything on there is fine for souce on max, you could dumb down the graphics card seeing as its overpowered for source and underpowered for anything new. everything else is fine, if its within the budget then thats a great computer for 500 bucks. you did remember to buy windows right? unless your "bought" windows already.

I'm not a AMD fan but i feel that if the choice is a quad core or a dual core you should go quad. but if you are going back to dual get an intel, unless the price difference is significant.

The Quad will make no difference on CS.

take it from someone who owns a quad core.... very little games use it.

which basically means higher clocked dual cores will probably perform better in games

he does have the money for a quad core... it's just not that great of a quad core.
you guys are right he doesn't need it for CS:S or really any other games but i don't really see a reason not to get it unless the dual core chip will outperform it (which it may very well do) but no harm in future proofing.

*fixed link

Broken link....

Also you might want to go the route of pre built I found you a great deal...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883107688

It has near the specs as yours but with a 500gb HDD... and just add 1 more gb of ram for 20 bucks

You also get a Card Reader plus a back up gfx card in case your over heats or something...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141210 and a legit copy of vista + a a keyboard and mouse.

You may go 20 bucks over your limit but you are getting a way better deal...
I also havent really looked at it real well but I not sure if that card will fit well in there..

Also a little offtopic but 500 Canadian dollars = 503.88 U.S. dollars
where back on top...lol

I don't. To each, his own I say. I got lots of AMD and Intel machines. I can't say about performance because some of them are dedicated rigs.

Now what I'm really interested in are those CELL add-in cards. Hee hee!
