Friends Afraid Of You Working On Their Computer
So, I'm pretty computer savvy. And about 3 months ago, my friend needed more space on his PC. He was going to use his external hard drive, but they're slow as **** when transferring big files. I told him I'd throw in an extra 200GB hard drive I had. And since he copied a lot of DVDs, I told him I'd put an extra DVD drive in there too, so he could copy the DVD from one burner to the other, without swapping discs. So, I put them in. And, the DVD drive just doesn't work with his PC, not even with the right drivers. And, the hard drive is being gay, and will only show one of the partitions I put on it. (40GB)
Anyway, when I boot it up, the internet doesn't work. WTF? How the hell could the new hardware affect the software like that? I figure out that some files got deleted. I'm ****ing clueless. I go to the system restore point, as these files are just like configuration files or something. And to my luck, none of the system restore points work. :Argh: So, I take the hard drive and DVD drive back out and boot it up. There's a .dll file missing. WTF is going on here? So, I have to reinstall XP. Anyway, now I told him I have another 200GB hard drive, and a different DVD burner that someone gave me. Well, he wanted me to put them in.
Well, he called me earlier, and told me that the 40GB partition on the drive I have him was erased. :Argh: He said he didn't delete it, all of his files just disappeared. So, now he's scared, and won't let me put the new drives in. And I try telling him that the hardware couldn't affect the software in that way, but he won't have it. Anyway, I'll be over his house tomorrow, we'll see what happens.
I made this thread for two reasons. One is to discuss similar problems you've had with you working on your friends computer. The other is to ask, what the **** happened to my friends computer? I mean, can the hardware changes really delete files like that? Was it a virus? Any insight at all?
