I've been having a problem with my internet spiking lately, since the purchase of a new PC, I've become fed up of dying on games because of it so I did some digging, and it appears to be my PC, and not my internet as I suspected (because I went WELL over the download limit).
After running ping -t 192.168.0.1 I get a good constant time of about 1-2 ms, and every so often a massive 1400+ ms ping, this being between my PC and my router tells me its an issue purely with the PC. I've not had time yet to check with any of my laptops, but pre-purchase everything was running fine without any spikes. I've removed the driver and re-installed it, no fix, I've tried upgrading drivers but theres nothing new. I've got until Wednesday morning to try and fix the issue before I have a chat with PC World tech support... Dear Lord forgive me for I have sinned, I purchased from PC World ![]() Anyway, the PC is running Vista, and the card APPEARS to be a Ralink of some description. If you need any more info just let me know, I'll also post the ping logs if required. Thanks. -Aura

Is it a horrible media centre pc?
I have a ralink integrated card on a PC I purchased from PC World, sometimes it will just disconnect randomly. But it only happens really occassionally so I dont really care. |

Nah, its a nice media PC
(was about the only reason I'm still on Vista and not back on XP).I don't have any disconnection problems, infact this card is so strong I can pick up signals from people streets away... its just that damned spiking... I'm tempted to use my Ubuntu liveCD to see if it spikes in that, but I know once its booted into Ubuntu, I'll only want to install. -Aura

I have an IDE to USB adaptor around somewhere, I may remove my laptop hard drive, and boot my PC using that (Ubuntu) and see how it works, it will also mean I can download any drivers required.

Well, I did some searching online this morning as I had a little free time, and I found out the cause and possible fixes for it.
The cause: Vista searches for new networks every 60 seconds or so, which is what causes the spike. The fix: Unlike XP you can't turn off Microsofts wireless manager, and they see it as a feature not a bug... you can use some software like WLANOptimizer or Vista Anti-Lag to fix it (just search for the sites) Hopefully some poor soul who purchased Vista will stumble across here and be saved a few hours ![]() -Aura
