Default the absolutely best antivirus?

i was curious to know what you would consider the absolutely best antivirus for a windows based PC. what do i mean by the best? Well i would like to consider the best to be the most effective for tracking and hunting out viruses, the one that uses the least amount of system resources to get that job done, the smartest when it comes to tweaking certain parts of system to optimize security without sacrificing performance.

So what'll it be ladies n gents?

Any Suggestions?

I believe its NOD32, the best AV with the lowest resource usage.
Of course on the free AV front its a draw between AVG free and Avast free.

The number one antivirus in the world is absolutely free. It's called your brain. Dont get a virus in the first place and you don't need an antivirus, but if you really want one go with AVG, it's free and pretty good. and its always up to date.

right, so if i want to refrain from getting a virus i have to stop using the internet altogether? or confirm that every website i go to and every file i download is virus free?

Well, i really dont want to live in that kind of box, so if i want to roam the internet freely i would like to use protection. i mean you dont go jumping into any female's random ***** without a condom right? I mean i hope not, for your sake.

It's not the same at all.

You use common sense and you won't need your anti-virus. Just don't be an idiot on the internet.

antivir or avast

if you want to cover EVERYTHING, the above + adaware + spybot + Malwarebytes

I at one stage did NOD32 + Kaspersky + Spybot + AdAware... I've shortened it to NOD32 + Spybot. Go for NOD32 if your PC is low on resources, Kaspersky if you want the best protection and decent resources.

do i seem like the kind of person who would say to stop using the internet. i said dont be an idiot, use your brain and better judgement to determine if a site is safe. dont click on every random link that claims to lead to something. dont download video files if they are 176Kb, you know. your brain USE IT! but yes avast or AVG are fine.

i do use my brain, there are obvious things to avoid, like some you have pointed out, but there are others that are unavoidable or even tricky.

You're stupid...there I had to say it. There are several ways to get viruses, spyware, etc and they don't all involve going to unsafe websites. I would never, ever leave a computer without any form of antivirus software on it. My friend never had an AV installed and didn't do much browsing and in the end he had to reformat his computer as a result.

The best antivirus software is not your brain, that's the worst kind of "anti-virus" you can have.

Nod32 has been a favorite of mine for quite some time although is quite expensive - if you have the money I suggest Nod32. For a free anti-virus Avast! Home all the way - it has yet to fail me. Norton 2009, although not free, is another good antivirus program from the early reviews (yes..it's Norton, and yes I'm saying it's decent).

As far as spybot - that's not antivirus but is good to have

funny because i got tired of AV **** and stopped using it altogether and just used firewall and spyware progams and i haven't had a single problem with my computer in over a year. compared to the many times i had to reformat my HDD with AV programs.

You must be very lucky and chances are you have viruses or even spyware on your computer that you are not aware of... Having to reformat when you had an AV installed compared to not having to reformat when not having one is just pointless/irrelevant - I have to reformat for several reasons, I can usually get rid of viruses without a reformat.

You also have no idea what you are talking aboutl..saying all AV software is **** and that Norton is bad (yes it WAS, but is it now...not as much).

Just because you don't notice any problems doesn't mean your computer is "clean"

Norton IS 2009 has been getting some raving reviews. I'm even tempted to try Norton again (last time wasn't too good). They apparently have changed for the better.

I am currently using NOD32 for about 2 years now and its really good. Used it on my old crappy computer from Feburary 2007 and also using it on my really fast computer that i have now since June 2008 and ive had no problems. Mind you ive had no viruses but i find its better safe than sorry.

Lmao

How would you even know if you have a virus?
Chances are your infected and your PC is acting as a zombie server right now.

But hey you know best....

Any PC connected to the internet or having any data added too it from a source which has checked it over (with at least 1 AV) should have a AV.

Nearly any media device/medium can contain a virus. Without your scanning it all on another PC before using it on an unprotected PC your asking for trouble.
I can a virus from a brand new, fresh off the shelf, mp3 player.

Trigun its people like you who help spread virus'.

you know, i really appreciate all of your input guys, especially on a very mundane subject like this, but what pisses me off beyond any and all possible human recognition, is that this is one of the only threads that ive started that has gotten literally a post.

Why do you guys pick the easy subjects to post replies and dont even bother to read or try to answer anything that's not in your specified subject matter?
