Default Windows Firewall turned off?

I have a PC with the latest version of XP. Every time I turn it on, about two minutes after bootup I get the message that windows firewall was turned off (which it hasn't been) and it goes away after a second or two, before I even have time to click the icon.

At first I thought spyware, so I ran ad-aware and spybot and both turned up nothing. Next I tried EasyCleaner to clean a possible registry error and that didn't work either! I've also tried turning off and on the firewall. The problem with this error message is that I'm pretty sure it's dramatically slowing the boot of my machine (as all windows security processes seem to do.) So, I've tried lots of stuff, any ideas?

Install a 3rd party firewall like ZoneAlarm or use a security suite like ESET Smart Security.

I would also suggest going with ZoneLabs software, Zonealarm is the firewall I use and beyond one minor problem with AVG its never let me down. (The problem with AVG is its somehow blocked it even though I've allowed AVG full access).

I wouldn't use any Microsoft software for security EVER, not only are they bad programmers (well, sloppy due to the amount I guess) they also take ages to patch their software and are the biggest target for various reasons. ZoneLabs on the other hand work on security based stuff and their rep will be wounded badly if they acted how Microsoft do, so they generally have updates very regular and lots of patches when problems are discovered.

Yeah, whenever I happen to boot it I always have a certain company's product for a certain thing, however since I rarely open executables I don't use nor have an anti-virus. Microsoft isn't there best, well, probably one of the worst, when it comes to keeping software safe and up-to-date, however they manage to keep their OS mostly up-to-date. They just need to rely on a bunch of open-source projects like most of the linux distros do, it'd save them millions.
