Default Can anyone help?

A couple of days ago my laptop froze, but didn't get the BSoD, then after that it doesn't boot windows anymore, it does the boot-checks and what-not, but when it comes to windows kicking in... nothing.

It won't even let me install a clean windows, it will freeze to the point the HDD is used, so comes to my conclusion that the HDD is failing.

But what I don't get is the following...

At the moment my VAIO is running a little linux distro purely from RAM so it's all working enough, but I can still access everything from my HDD.

So why can I browse my HDD like normal yet it will crash my VAIO with any attempt to read/write from run it using anything else (install/run windows)?

Try this: enter safe mode, and then try to install windows again. Maybe a new software is installed on your computer that disables options.

It won't let me choose any advanced options with Windows, it will let me goes as far a booting a CD/DVD, anything past that requiring Windows will not do a thing. =(

If you can't enter safe mode, if you can't pass BsoD, and if you can't install windows from startup. Then this computer is screwed, unless you exchange the HDD.

I'd recommend backing up your data ASAP incase the HDD is failing. You could reformat from Linux and attempt re-installing windows again. While your in Linux, you could find some HDD testing tools and check it to try and preemptively determine if it is failing. Their are also viruses that can hide in their own partitions, so check for that too.

It's OK about my data, it's all backup up, I'm running Ubuntu at the moment, which strangely has no objection to installing to my HDD... :/

Figures.

Possibly a dodgy windows CD. If you want to check your HDD though, I reccomend Hiren's BootCD. Boot into that and run a few hardware tests

Yep, it's definately a section of my HDD that's failing, I've tried to install MAC OSX and it will freeze installing at about 80% which is possibly where the damaged part of the HDD resides.

You will be able to delete and create a new partition if you have a copy of an Operating System. If you can't replace the Hard Drive.

Yea I managed to get my VAIO in perfect working order again =D

I picked up an external HDD (250GB) from Currys, ripped it apart and got the internal HDD from inside the itty pretty casing and then unscrewed my laptop and replaced it basically :]

Strange really, all that an external HDD is is just an internal HDD in a silly casing, but just a bit cheaper.

Now running the latest Windows 7 and feels so good to have it back again :]
