Not really. All it takes is a fundamental understanding of Networks and OS's and it can be done. And with all these people jumping on the Windows 7 RC boat, the net is ripe for the picking.
The average user usually doesn't know enough to really protect themselves. Even with Antivirus or firewall. I'm usually tech support for friends/family so I've found the most critical flaw with any system is seated between the keyboard and the chair. lol

Same here I'm the one who always has to be called for a computer-related problem, sometimes it can be quite laughable at the "problems" they're having.

i already have the upgrade ordered, i've been using the beta releases, im currently running Build 7600 of Home Premium, i love it. its much better than vista with all the Aero effects and then some. but with the performance of windows XP with DirectX 10. So far i havn't had to update any drivers except my video card but everything else like my wireless USB card windows installs automatically which didn't happen with vista, or XP for that matter. I love everything about Windows Se7en, it hasn't let me down yet and i have been using it since the first beta release and loved every minute with it. it really is a remarkable operating system that i believe will replace windows XP.

Ive got a question that I just can't seem to find an answer to. So I bought a new laptop in August and it qualified for the free Windows 7 upgrade. I Filled out all the necessary info and sent my proof of purchase to HP so my Windows 7 Upgrade should be along soon. Now here's my question, can I perform a clean install over Vista with the Upgrade Disc? Does the upgrade disc have the option to format my vista partition and install Windows 7 or can I only perform the in place upgrade?

I'll be upgrading. Going to order my upgrade disc of Windows 7 Professional this week. I'm coming from Windows Vista Home Premium OEM 32Bit.

I clean installed 7 Ultimate over my previous Vista factory install but was surprised that the used space on my primary hdd partition is almost 68GB. I unhid (is that a word?) all system files and hidden folders but can only account for about 20GB. I thought maybe the free space calculation took into account space reserved for the recycling bin but that only makes about about another 15GB for my 3 partitions.

Thats weird. You did a format then install right? I installed Windows 7 with less then a 6GB footprint.
Its not your documents is it? I'll probably do a fresh Windows 7 install when I get an external 1tb to backup my files and all my ACER software is updated to support Win7. I'm trying to use Ubuntu full time now so it'll just be for my classes that need certain Windows capabilities.

@ Vodkkaa: I don't think you wiped the primary Partition/Hard Drive when installing Windows 7, therefore you might still have some bits and bobs left over from Vista.
@ Larryr: What do you expect out of 7 to have it like XP in your view, to me it's closer to XP than ever before, it's got the Speed of XP, it uses less system resources from bootup like XP, it has much better gaming compatibility like XP. |

@ Iconic: somewhere in the ballpark Iconic. If 7 turns out to be decent I may go earlier.
@Skyline : We'll have to see. It may turn out to be like XP, or not. IMO its too early to tell. As long as its more reminiscent of XP, and not Vista, then half the battle is won. VIsta has been the only operating system I have ever hated, and for that reason, it makes me sketchy to update.

Well to sum it up in my opinion, it has the looks and style of Vista with none of the drawbacks and also has the performance and speed of XP.
So it's win for me.

I used the program treesize to try to find all the used space on my hdd. Treesize tells me that I am only using 18.1GB, but that I only have 217GB free of a possible 264GB. I still have 29GB of data somewhere that I can't find and that treesize can't find either. Last edited by vodkkaa; 10-31-2009 at 10:51 AM.. |

Do a Windows 7 install again and once you get to the Install Options, click your primary drive and click "Drive Options" on the bottom and then delete it, then create a new partition and install Windows 7 again.

Lol, I destroyed my motherboard for the sake of Windows 7! XD I wanted to update to it. When it restarted, boom BSOD shows up telling me that my bios is outdated. Thus, I tried to update the bios on my mobo. And guess what? The case powers up, but the mobo malfunctions. I had many problems with this motherboard. I think it is time to get a new one once and for all. I am going to by a DG41Pr Intel Original. I think that is the correct number.

If a simple BIOS update messed with it, it was an obviously buggy motherboard.

The error was kinda like this "The BIOS of the motherboard is not ACPI Complaint. Contact your manufacturer to supply you with an updated BIOS." The BIOS of the Mobo was actually outdated. 2007.

Yesterday I bought an intel original DG41RQ. The latest in its series. Now everything is working better than before. Games are not freezing, wireless adapter is working (it was malfuctioning in the older mobo), and the PC is generally faster. The the mobo has an integrated X4500 VGA card. Quite good. I am going to update to Windows 7 soon. Hope everything turns out well, which it should.
Btw, I am upgrading from XP VIA custom install. Do you guys recommend that? Or should I reboot the PC and the CD is inserted, then format the HD, then install W7?

Especially when upgrading from on older OS. It might take a little longer but definitely worth the time. It ensures that there are no incompatibility or remnants of the previous OS which can cause trouble that might not have an easy fix, or a fix at all.

Always do a clean install of an OS no matter what it is. I plan to clean install. I can't wait for my Win 7 Professional. I'm taking back ups of my laptop once a week, while I'm waiting for my Win 7 for the arrival of it in the mail so I'll be ready.
