You can install XP on another partition but it will overwrite the Windows 7 bootloader. All you have to do is insert the Windows 7 Disc and use the recovery options (specifically the "fixmbr" command) to fix bootloader.
The best setup is to install XP first then install 7. Its bootloader will overwrite the outdated XP bootloader. It really depends what you feel like doing. It might be more problematic if you install XP after 7 but it is possible. This tutorial outlines the whole process, using EasyBCD to fix the bootloader. Too bad. If you are re-doing it, do the XP then 7 install. I would suggest obtaining a Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) apposed to the beta. Even if they're are subtle changes, the Beta is supposed to be blocked out soon and shutdown every 2 hours or something to that effect.
The Beta also can't be upgraded to a full Windows 7 so you're left out in the open for compatibility/security/support. If the Windows 7 RC is not a full option, google "slic 2.1" and read around a bit.

You should be able to duel-boot on any system with one hard drive as long as the disk is partitioned.
Unless you mean you don't have a big enough hard drive.

Ok. Its weird so I don't really understand you're problem. I've been dual-booting on PC's as old as 1995 and they've worked fine. You must have a very odd controller. I've never heard of that problem before.
I think dual-booting with 2 drives is more efficient anyway. It gives each OS their own drive, apposed to partitioning which can get messy.

Ok, so what is your setup now?
HDD1 - Windows XP HDD2 - Windows 7 Is that right? If you installed XP first, then download and install EasyBCD. Make sure you have at least Net Framework 2.0 installed. It should allow you to select where Windows 7 is installed and fix the bootloader. Try the same if you installed Windows 7 first, but instead select where you installed Windows XP (though the Windows 7 bootloader should have automatically fixed that). Its always best to install the oldest OS first, then the newest so the bootloader is updated.

lol ok, did you try installing EasyBCD,go to "Add/Remove Entries", under "Type" select "Windows NT/2k/XP/2k3", select the drive where XP is installed, then click "Add Entry", then hit "Save".
Reboot and see if you can select XP from the boot menu.

Ok, insert the Windows 7 CD and boot from it.
> Select your language > hit "Next" > At the bottom, select "Repair Your Computer" You should be able to take it from there, but basically its to restore it so you can boot into Windows 7. I never thought to ask this till now, but why do you need to dual-boot XP and 7? 7 is supposed to have much better support for XP programs and games. If you really need a program that doesn't work on XP, you can try the Windows 7 XP Mode (if your system is decent): Download Windows XP Mode I think this would be much simpler then dual-booting.

I ditched Dual-Booting because I only used to do it with Vista and XP because well... Vista sucked in aspects in which XP excelled upon, but now I don't need to because 7 is all-round good for me... man I sound like one of them idiots fom the Windows 7 adverts who boast about it... only difference is I've had 7 for almost 2 years now
