Recently my mum's laptop just died on her and now it won't boot AT ALL.
I have tried evey possible method of restoration but now the only thing i can do is to use data recovery. I have no idea what to use for laptops, it would be great if i could use a program which will copy the files to my usb removable storage device from the laptops hdd WITHOUT the need of using windows. I cannot access windows at all so i have no idea what to do without having to format the hdd. Any suggestions please, thanks in advance |

I have the same problem with my laptop and this info could really help. It has been dead for a couple years now and I have been too lazy to try and retrieve everthing off the hard drive. It's mostly pictures that I need to get that I don't have saved anywhere else. They are also the kind of pictures that sometimes your girlfriend or ex GF won't let you take again, know what I mean?

Currently I am trying a bog standard chkdsk but using Win 98 rather than XP.
It sounds stupid but for some reason it works for some things like formatting a HDD to fat32, then unpartitioning, then reboot using XP and using the 'NFTS' partition. (This would solve the problem i had with the NFTS partition not using the whole 160gb of free space yet doing this would allow it. So.... I am trying the good old 98 chkdsk. Try here for a usefull way of using a USB to boot up windows remotely. Won't work for me but maybe you can http://ucsu.colorado.edu/~shaher/Bootable_USB.html |

Don't think this will work for me since you have to be able to turn it on first, which I can't.

This is a longshot but this actually worked on my last laptop. It began to turn itself off for no apparent reason, it'd just be on then--weather I was using it or not--just zap off. So I called my computer's customer support. The rep told me to unplug the laptop and then to hold down the power button for fifteen seconds. After I did I replugged it and the thing actually turned on. It wouldn't turn off on its own anymore, either. In fact what finally killed my laptop was me throwing it to the wall in a fit of rage (The rage wasn't computer-related.

What I would suggest is this. Go to your favorite computer store and look for a laptop to PCI adapter. They're pretty cheap, less than $5. Take the HDD out of the laptop and put the adapter on it. Then, take it and plug it into a PCI slot on your desktop. You might have to unplug something, like a CD drive first. Then, boot up Windows.
The best way to try to recover data from a HDD without booting off it is this method. This way, it's just a secondary drive on your desktop. Then you can try to copy files from the laptop drive onto your desktop drive. Then try reformatting the laptop drive and reinstalling an OS. When you're done, you can network your laptop to your desktop to copy the files back, or use the adapter again. |
