they are going to be slower than a p2p such as bearshare - but you can slightly speed it up by min. your upload limit and max. your download limit - and of cource always look for torrents with a good seed-to-leech ratio

Speeds on torrents depend on several factors

1. Are there many seeds? Seeds are people who are uploading the data and have completed downloading the torrent. The more seeds, the more bandwidth available and the only way you can finish your download to 100%.

2. If you are behind a router, have you fowarded your ports (typically 6881-6889) that can cause problems.

3. If there are a small amount of seeders and many leechers(people who are downloading) then those few seeders have to give their bandwidth proportionally to the upload rates of the leechers and the number of leechers in all. Also, if the leecher's total upload rate is low, then you will get a low download if you download a part off of them. Usually, the more you share, the more you get.

4. If you are cheap meaning you do not upload 100% of the torrent then I hear that the next time you will get less download speed.

I hope this makes the speed issue clearer.

Make sure your firewall/router isnt blocking certain ports that bit torrent uses.
http://portforward.com/
You need to forward some ports to get it to a good speed usually. Check that site for instructions.

limiting upload is what is wrong with bittorrent. you are getting from other users who are also stingy with the upload thats why speeds suck.
as for a 500mb file in a day or 2, lol I think you got problems man.
I am 1 hour into a 700mb file and a 500 mb file and both are going strong and will be done in about 2 hours. unless of course seeders ditch or something like that.

I'm behind a router, so I forwarded external ports 6881-6889 and internal ports 6881-6889. It now maxes out at about 40kb/s it's faster, but I can get well over 100kb/s on limewire

Why use bit torrent? There are far better ways to get things out there. I can download 3 full DVDs a day with usenet, rather than taking several days to do the same with BT.

Use this
http://www.lvllord.de/
in Azureus
Tools > Options
Change Max simultaneous outbound connections to 50
Then go to transfer and change the boxs to
0
0
4
0
0
P.S. i use the latest Azureus beta, i went from about 20 kb average to 60-100kb average. Sometimes even up to 200kb/s.

Because You need to pay for usenet and BT is free.

it seem like too much trouble considering that barely anyone here uses it.

I really don't see what's hard about it, download a client, set it to connect to your ISP's news server, and start downloading stuff. You don't even have to forward ports or do any IP routing.

I'm going to change to cable from DSL. I heard that Wide Open West is faster then Comcast so i'm thinking about getting it. But I could also get comcast. Do you know which ISP has a better server?

That's not true, most ISPs limit traffic through the default ports that BT uses. All you have to do is forward your BT client through an abnormally high port range, and you'll have no trouble

Most trackers have BitComet banned so I would advise against that. I use Bit Tornado.
