Ram question:
the 2x512mb ram I have now is DDR2 PC3200 and I want to add another gig of ram. If the ram I buy is 2x512mb DDR2 PC4200 can these 4 sticks work together? or do they have to all be 3200? PSU Advice: I am currently upgrading an HP PSU 300 watt to something better since I added a 6600GT and the PSU can no longer handle it. So I'm wondering, should I get a 40$ canadian thermaltake psu at 430w to handle my system for a year or 2 or should I get a really high end one like a raidmax 580w for 80$ candian and make it last to my next computer ? |

Most of the time a 512 stick with work with a 1gb stick. But you have to figure out your max # of slots for ram and the max amount of ram your pc can use.
For me i have 2 slots and a max of 2 gigs so i can have 2 1gb sticks. For me they all have to be DDR PC2700

okay; thx...I'll find some cheap pc3200 ram
....maybe it will be even cheaper if I wait a bit more? say till may or the summer?I know my mobo can handle 4gb of ram total...4 slots...so if it came with pc3200 default; does it mean it can handle 4 sticks of pc3200? Also, would 4 sticks of 512 be better than 2 sticks of 512 and 1 stick of 1gb? Last edited by dy457y; 02-01-2006 at 06:40 AM.. |

4 GB of RAM is unstable, I wouldn't recomend it. I also wouldn't get cheap RAM, because cheap RAM tends to have miserable performance. Corsair makes great RAM, I would get identical sticks from them.

if the 4200 are at higher speeds than the 3200 and they all are compatible with your motherboard, your speed will decrease to the speed of 3200. also, if they are the same speed, there is no point in changing your memory unless you need extra memory. if you don't need extra memory, your pc won't benefit from it since it will never use it. second, if you want to upgrade, make sure you are getting better ram than previous or you will not see a difference.
most people suggest a 400W power supply now a days. I have a generic one that came with my case and it works great. if you have really high end parts, I might think about getting that other power supply, but more than likely, you won't need it in the current day. but probably in the future when parts require more power. |

If you put higher performing RAM in with lower performing RAM, it will automatically run at the speed of the lower performing RAM, so you wont get the best performace out of it. Also the rating on PSU's aren't great, becuase what most cheaper PSU makers tend to do is to label it with the peak performance e.g. a cheap 400w PSU would have a peak of 400w, which it could only achieve for a few seconds at the most, where as a better brand one will have a continuous supply of 400w if not higher. So I would advise going with the higer priced one. That reminds me I need a new PSU, my 240w one is barely enough to power my 9800 pro GFX card
