Default ISP's blocking Limewire and other P2P apps

For the last few weeks I haven't been able to connect to Limewire. At first I thought it was no big deal, but after about 3 weeks I started getting frustrated. After some searching last night, I found out that my ISP (Optimum Online) has started blocking P2P apps! I spent 4 hours on the Limewire forums reading up on fixes and hacks to get past the block. I must have tried about 300 proxies before I finally gave up. It really sucks asking my friends in NY to download songs for me and send them to me over AIM. Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone else has an ISP who blocks these things, and if you've ever gotten it to work.

i live in the bronx, I have optonline. I think they just caped your connection for uploading to much. They did it to me a couple of a years ago. You can call them up and ask them, they will give a warning then remove the cap.

But I don't share, I just download. As soon as file finish, I move them. Yeah, I know, it's bad, but whatever.

Bellsouth is my ISP and it allows me to use limewire just fine. I also have an AOL account, so when I sign into AOL is when I get problems. All my connections that were downloading, all of them turn to a connecting status . . . so I just don't sign into AOL when I wish to download things. I forget which port limewire uses but if you are using a firewall or the like make sure that it's not blocking that port.

My ISP still runs it but i was over a friends, and she has my same isp and she got a popup from WOW! (our isp) saying that it detected filesharing and that its illegal and blah blah blah. IM the one paying THEM. They cant tell me what the f*ck to do. If they start blocking me i'll switch isps so fast it'll make their heads spin.

Good. The world needs to stop using p2p anyway. it sucks. Usenet is so much more simple and faster. especially with nzb capabilities now.

Seriously though, just in my opinion its so much faster to get what you need through usenet. Its posted, you download it. that simple. No waiting for seeds, queues, or anything like that.

Uhm... Doesn't your IP address change every time you log on to a dialup account? So... Let's say that your Bellsouth IP is 111.111.111.111. So when you go to limewire and start downloading from IP 55.55.55.5, the connection is between 111.111.111.111 and 55.55.55.5. So when you log on to AOL, your IP address changes from 111.111.111.111 to say... 2.2.2.22. There is no longer a connection from 55.55.55.5 to 111.111.111.111. Try exiting limewire and starting it up again after logging on to AOL.

you might also want to try this
1.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>PO RT AND MAKE SURE THE BOX SAYS 6346

2.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>FI REWALLS AND CHECKMARK THE FORCE IP BOX AND MAKE SURE THIS ALSO SAYS PORT 6346

3.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>PR OXY AND CONFIGURE A PROXY THAT WORKS. THERE ARE TONS OF PROXY SITES OUT THERE JUST YAHOO SEARCH 'PROXY LISTS'
IN MY CASE I USED A SOCKS V5 PROXY THAT I FOUND TO BE WORKING SO HERE IS AN EX. OF HOW I IMPLEMENTED THE OPTIONS.

4.) CHECK THE SOCKS V5 BOX AND IN THE PROXY WINDOW I PUT 69.240.156.39 AND IN THE PORT BOX I PUT 3380

****NOTE**** PROXIES CAN WORK FOR 2YEARS-2DAYS-1HR-5MIN SO 1ST RUN A CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE PROXY U WANNA USE WORKS FOR THE TIME BEING YOU WILL ONLY NEED A WORKING PROXY FOR LIKE 5MINUTES WHILE YOU DO A CONNECT TO THE NETWORK

5.) CLICK APPLY AND THEN OK

6.) HIT FILE>DISCONNECT

7.) HIT FILE>CONNECT ... IF U DIDNT CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE PROXY WORKED THAT YOU ARE TRYING U WILL NOW FIND OUT IF IT WORKS OR NOT CUZ IF SO THE NETWORK WILL NOW CONNECT!!!

8.) ONCE CONNECTED, JUST DO A RANDOM SEARCH LIKE '50 CENT' OR WHATEVER IT IS YOU MIGHT WANNA TRY BUT JUST MAKE SURE WHATEVER YOU SEARCH WILL BRING UP A LOT OF RESULTS BECAUSE IF DONE CORRECTLY YOU SHOULD NOW SEE RESULTS POPPING UP

9.) IF INSTEAD OF ALWAYS BRINGING UP ZERO RESULTS, UR SEARCH ACTUALLY RETURNS WITH SOME RESULTS YOU ARE NOW PROPERLY CONNECTED!!!!

**NOTE** ONLY DO THESE NEXT STEPS IF U PLAN ON KEEPING LIMEWIRE UP FOR A VERY LONG TIME **RECOMMENDED**, THUS U WONT HAVE TO CONNECT BACK TO THE NETWORK FOR A WHILE CUZ EVERYTIME U CLOSE OUT LW AND START IT BACK UP OR DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT BACK TO THE NETWORK U WILL HAVE TO DO STEPS 1-9 EVERYTIME WHICH I KNOW IS A HASSLE BUT IT'S BETTER THAN NOT BEING ABLE TO GET ANY FILES AT ALL.

10.) GO BACK TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>FI REWALLS AND UNCHECK THE FORCE IP BOX

11.) GO TO TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED>PR OXY AND CLICK THE NO PROXY BUTTON

12.) CLICK APPLY THEN OK

and it sould be good to go

Not unless they reserve you MAC address in DHCP for "violating" any T&Cs they might have. Then it doesn't matter, your modem/network connection will ALWAYS get that same IP address that they will have blocked from using a p2p application.
It's called a "quarantine zone", I use them all the time at work to shunt idiot users into dead IP ranges where they can't use a damn thing on the network at all.

yea, comcast seems to not be completely closing ports, but slowing them down to the point of uselessness...

Usenet is great btw, don't tell the nubs about it, because then it's less bandwidth for us!

If you have a firewall that might be blocking the access. It happened to me.

i agree it has taken me a while to get used for it, but it is so much more reliable. usually what you see is what you get none of that downloading a movie that you want and get some old dvd rip that you don't. also there is a nice indexing site (www.newzbin.com) that you have to pay for, but you can search for what you want and get the nbz file.

the only time i use limewire is when its a last resort.

Bascially....its a forum, with p2p stuff.

YOu post up a file say something like doom3.new.offical.expansi on.2006.repost.madethisup .. or something like that, people then download it. Its fast, but many of the places to get the files are from payed servers.

http://slyck.com/ng.php

Best guide i've read about Newsgroups.

Also an alternative to www.newzbin.com is www.binsearch.info. It's free which is the best part. The only problem is you need to know the file name which is sometimes hard to guess, especially since some games are abbreviated in strange ways.
