Default sata drive errors

I am about 90% sure there are data errors on one of my sata wd drives. i have 2 of them, one works great, the other one has started giving me problems last month. first, one day on a bootup my computer wouldent see the drive. i could see it in the boot up, and in disk management, and hardware monitor, but not on 'my computer' itself. also in disk management, the hidden disk was seen as 'unallocated' and 'uninitialized'.

after some lucky searching, i got a copy of r-studio, a drive scanning tool, and used its repair tool to fix that problem. it simply gave the drive back its letter 'j', and it ran fine, no data missing.

about 2 weeks ago, i started going through the data, and noticed a few lock up areas. disk cleanup and disk defrag caused the comp to freez and lock up. i deleated the few files that the scans would make it hang up, and got it to work on everything but the defrag. good enough for now. in the next days i began planning to back up the data and get ready to format it.

this morning, the comp had a hard time booting. it would go past the 'thinking' bar, but wouldent get to the login screen. i unplugged the hurt drive, and it starts like a charm, wicked fast. if the comp is up and working, and i plug the drive in, my comp jumps up to 50-100% cpu usage, and eventualy hangs.

i feel that if i can just get my comp to stop hanging, i can use r-studio again, if needed, and finaly do the copy and format. and if that dosent help it, im all set to buy a new drive. all i want is to copy the data, all my art, installers, and anime.

thanks for the help. ps, the drive thats broke is a WD1600JD-75HBBO

double-post to get noticed, sorry.

in related news, a freind told me to download knoppix linux, burn it to a cd, and load my comp on that. good news, i can see all my harddrives, and i can access the files! now all i need to do is be able to transfer the files between the drives, and format it.

turns out that knoppix and ntfs dont mix. iv read a few sites, and tried r-clicking the drive, unchecking 'read only', and copying the files, but i still get rejected. what am i missing here?
