Default [Help] Best way to transfer large files?

Well, I have a backup of my Windows XP Professional CD on my laptop at the momment and am hoping to transfer it to my desktop so I can burn it on a DVD. I no longer have the XP CD as it is with my brother in college and am in need of the DVD backup.

I need a way to either:
1) Transfer Windows XP to my desktop
2) Split it up (ISO Image) and place it on multiple CD's

Is there any easy way of doing #2? Or..is there a fast solution to #1 that will not take too long?

I'm not sure about #2, but a direct connection is pretty fast for #1. I transfered 5gb of songs from my computer to the other in around 5-20 minutes. (i was watching tv so i'm not sure as to the exact time.

Yea, just create/use an ISO and transfer it to your desktop through a wired connection.

I transfer videos and other large files between my laptop and desktop all the time, it doesn't take that long.

Ah, I never thought of that! But..I'm not too familiar with such direct connections... Will there be required software that goes along with the ethernet connection?

No CD-R's, forgot to mention that I haven't had a CD burner in quite some time, so never needed them

If you do decide on using Windows File Sharing, here is a method to protect your shared folders:

Quote:
Protect Shared Folders

Password-protecting a shared folder on a network was simple in Windows 98. How do I protect my shared folders in Windows XP?

J. Bankston, White Oak, Texas

This chore, which was easy in earlier Windows versions, is difficult and poorly documented in XP Professional and theoretically impossible in XP Home. But there's a workaround: When someone accesses your computer over a local network, XP provides access through the Guest account, even if that account is turned off. So if you password-protect the Guest account, you effectively password-protect network access to your PC.

On your XP system (which I'll call the "host"), select Start, Run, and type net user guest password, replacing password with something less obvious (see the advice in the October 2003 Internet Tips column on how to create hard-to-guess passwords). Press Enter and reboot your system.

From now on, visitors trying to log on to the host from another PC will run into a dialog box asking for the password. Without it, they can't log on. There are a couple of caveats, however.

First, visitors must first access your PC through Windows (rather than through an application), which opens a password dialog box automatically. They won't be able to access the folder on the host through another program until they've done so with Windows Explorer, the desktop, or another Windows resource.

Second, the host's Guest account must be turned off--that's the default setting. If it's on, select Start, Control Panel, User Accounts, Guest, Turn off the guest account.
I don't remember where I found it but that is what I have saved in my txt document.

Just use a crossover cable and create a static ip on one pc use 192.168.1.1 ip, 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, and leave the rest blank, on the other pc use 192.168.1.2 ip and 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. As long as your not using a router leave the getaway, and dns's blank.

Let's see..the file is on my Laptop which has a CD Burner, although I do not have any CDRs. My desktop computer has a DVD burner, thus making it pointless to have a CD Burner at the time, so I never needed to purchase more CDRs, just DVDRs\

at the current time, I'm thinking about attempting the remote desktop transfering, although I hate using networked connections

@Soviet, already found that on google

Could you upload it online somewhere safe where only you could download it? Is there a way you could use QJ's server for a short while, but make it somewhere where only you know where it is? I don't know, I'm trying to think outside the box <_<

How big is the file? Can you just host it somewhere from your laptop and then download it on your desktop?

Lol, that's out of the question, don't want to bother uploading and downloading again 700mb (somewhere around there) isn't something I want to spend uploading and downloading

Thats because its the easiest way and best way. I'm so good at networking( i am in the cisco class) i didnt need google to think of that idea. Honestly networking or putting the iso on a removible storage are your 2 best options. Setting up a static ip address takes about 30 sec on each pc and connecting the cable takes like 5 sec.

Alright, might just do that to spare me the cash I'm not sure if I have a crossover cable though, but I'll try to figure it out. I hate networking, something that I never really needed to learn I know the general gist, but nothing too complicated. I can barely create static IPs

I know way to much about networking. I know a ton of stuff that other ppl dont know. Like ARP, RARP, BGP,TCP/IP,IPX,AT,EGP,Link-state,Distence Vector, IGRP,EIGRP,OSPF,RIP,LSA,c ost,how to configure a cisco 2500 router, how to make a cat-5 cable, etc.

I would but its way to hard. Its amazing how hard the cisco tests are, you can know to set up a router and do everything and still fail the tests. Its like your teacher teachs you about a chapter and then you take the test. But on the test its questions like what color was his tie.
