Default Identifying problems..

Hey!

I have had this current computer for quite some time now and it seems to have run fine with no major issues since i bought it, but recently I have been having various problems. One problem is that whenever I try to open a folder which contains Xvid/Avi files the windows explorer crashes and PC has to restars. The second problem is with MSN messenger, when I try to send a file it will crash. And it also randomly crashes every now and again.

I am not sure if this is hardware or software- please help!

Short-term solution: Flatline and Rebuild

Long-term solution: Buy a Mac

I knew as soon as the word computer was in the thread, Mac would be the solution.

Anyway, it sounds software, try reinstalling.

True words since it is the final solution.

Words you DON'T hear coming from a Mac user.

Anyway, sounds like your DivX/XviD installation is fscked. Uninstall that and reinstall again.
Also, stay the fsck away from MSM. There are a few other solutions out there that work better and some can use MSM.
Well, on a Mac at least.

Because explorer is trying to run the corrupt Xvid/DivX codec.
MSN stands for MicroSoft Network.
MSM stands for everything from Meritorious Service Medal (I got one) to MicroSoft Messenger to men having sex with men.

Hate to burst your little bubble there, but go do some research on what OS X is based on. I compile *nix software and run it on my Mac with no problem.
The OS X install DVD comes loaded with X11 and full developer tools.
ANYTHING that can be compiled on a *nix box I can compile in OS X without having to resort to clunky CygWin XP/2000 installs.
GO look at the specs for the MacBook Pro 17" I just ordered and tell me that I'll be needing to "upgrade" any hardware soon. With 2GB RAM, 256 MB dedicated Video RAM, dual-core 2+GHZ CPU, and 120GB Serial ATA drive I won't be upgrading anytime "soon". And the most I'll have to upgrade would be the harddrive...but then again, there's 3 USB 2.0 ports, one Firewire 400 port and one Firewire 800 port I could hook an external drive up to. Hell, I can boot the entire OS X operating system off a 500GB Firewire drive if I wanted to.
Then there is running both OS X and XP Pro on the same laptop for those that must have their PC game collections, but I'll save that for another day.
Don't knock OS X until you've lived with it.

he never said anything about MSM,

Linux also compils.
I personally hate the idea of buying a computer,
i prefer to put it together.
Id rather not buy a mac to use then discover i have to use boot camp to run anything not made by mac or (rarely) an internet developer.
Id rather not run some OS i cant buy anouther copy of the OS and be unable to upgrade my computer without resorting to external drives.
But hey, thats just my preference.

btw: we once had a mac, we sutily didnt get anouther.

I have completely formatted my HardDrive and re installed windows XP - same problems with MSN Messenger, and I do not have any Xvid files to test!

Any more suggestions? I think this is most likely hardware!

Thanks in advance

I think it's because Microsoft releases half finished projects, like MSN Messenger, and it will never work . But that's just my opinion.

But no, I don't have anymore.

Hmmmm... so you dont think a hardware problem would cause MSN messenger to crash?

Try Gaim. It is a multi protocol IM program, which means that you can connect to the MSN network as well as AIM, ICQ, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. If that doesn't work then it may be a hardware (or network) problem.

Then buy an intel mac and install linux on it if you truly wish through boot camp. Itll run faster than your "do it yourself" PC.
OS X is a beautiful thing. More and more "PC hardcore fans" are switching to apple everday.

But its proven that windows runs slightly faster on mac hardware than normal PCs. Linux would be the same.
Mac OS X runs like **** on the PC, and its not fully compatible (you need to do a LOT of work to get it running decently.
