Default RAM help

wel, my new gateway notebook came with a 256mb RAM but when i check my system's info, by opening control panel, performance and maintainance, and then clicking system, it only said 192mb. is there a problem, or is this normal.

o and btw, im planning to buy a 512mb memory so to add to another slot. if i ad the 512 the total memory would be 768mb. has anyone experience any problems with a 768mb memory?

That's normal, the rest of the memory is shared with the onboard graphics and if you pick the same type of memory for your upgrade you shouldn't find a problem.

They'ed be mis-matched. The chances of having a problem are rather low, but I'd recommend buying two 512s, or one 1gb, and selling the old one. If you do buy a 512, don't get rid of the old one unless it doesn't work. It can't damage it just by putting new RAM in btw, unless it's defective or you're a complete retard ;D

both the chips should be of the same speed, i.e. 100mhz, 133mhz or 200mhz. preferably, the same brand.

regarding the missing memory, its being shared with your onboard graphics card. nothing to worry.
