DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 80% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R and DVD-RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 79% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R and DVD+RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).

There are basically 2 types of recordable DVD. + and -

The DVD- are supported by the DVD Forum which was founded by:
Hitachi
Matsushita
Mitsubishi Electric
Pioneer
Philips
Sony
Thomson
Time Warner Inc.
Toshiba
JVC

The formats supported and manufactured by the DVD Forum are as follows:
DVD-R: can record up to 4.5 GB in a similar fashion to a CD-R disc. Once recorded and finalized it can be played by most DVD-ROM players.
DVD-RW: can record up to 4.7 GB in a similar fashion to a CD-RW disc.
DVD-R DL: a derivate of DVD-R that uses double-layer recordable discs to store up to 8.5 GB of data.
DVD-RAM : requires a special unit to play 4.7GB or 9.4GB recorded discs (DVD-RAM disc are usually housed in a cartridge). 2.6GB discs can be removed from their caddy and used in DVD-ROM drives.

The other formats (+) are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance made up of:
Dell
Hewlett-Packard
Mitsubishi Chemical
Philips
Ricoh
Sony
Thomson SA
Yamaha Corp

The formats supported and manufactured/created by the DVD+RW Alliance are as follows:
DVD+R: can record up to 4.7 GB single-layered/single-sided DVD+R disc, at up to 16x speed. Like DVD-R you can record only once.
DVD+RW: can record up to 4.7 GB at up to 16x speed. Since it is rewritable it can be overwritten several times. It does not need special "pre-pits" or finalization to be played in a DVD player.
DVD+R DL: a derivate of DVD+R that uses dual-layer recordable discs to store up to 8.5 GB of data.

The compatibility can differ wildly depending on your burner, the discs you use and what you aim to play it in after burning. Generally though (from my experience) DVD+R are more compatible with DVD Players and Games consoles. Whereas if its for a PC then either will do.

Onto CD's. There is only one format of recordable CD and that is CD-R or CD-RW. There is no + as the CD was created by Sony and Philips and that is it. They then created the CD-WO (write once) which eventually evolved into the CD-R that we know today.

Anyway to summarise DVD+R's are probly best for whatever you need and CD-R's are the only recordable CD's you can get. Hope that answers your question.

If memory serves me correctly there was CD-WO which became CD-R. And CD-MO (magneto-optic) also called CD-E (Erasable) during its development which became CD-RW.

I know they don't if you actually read what I posted you would know that too.

CD-MO and CD-E were development prototypes leading up to the CD-RW.

Kinda like you can't buy a Nintendo Dolphin but you can buy a Nintendo Gamecube instead. (Dolphin was the name for gamecube while it was in development)

DVD-R is more reliable and compatible with DVD-ROM drives from all over.

Seriously? I'm not doubting your knowledge.

But my DVD's have been much more successful with +R's. Maybe its the discs or the burner being funny. I dunno.

I burn a LOT of 'all-in-one' auto-install DVDs that contain Windows XP Pro, Office 2003, and a slew of government apps that are all used in literally hundreds of different computers with different DVD-ROM drives and the DVD-R format hasn't failed me yet.
If you're burning DVD+Rs and just using them in the same drive that burned them then of course you'll have no problems reading them.
Problem is, I have to worry about those machines out there that do NOT have DVD+R reading capability, especially on older machines.
That's why I go with DVD-R for maximum compatability across a wide range of platforms.

I see. Disc images for users PCs I take it?

The +R's I burn are for my pc, my dads pc (same model drive) my ps2 and my dvd player. To be fair I've only made one coaster ever and that was a -R hence why I stick with +R.

It mainly comes down to what a particular DVD player is more compatible with. Some players like only - or some only like +, and some like both.

You can search through a database to see media compatibilty on this site: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

This is good to use to figure out what type of disc would work better and it is good if you are purchasing a dvd player so you can see compatibilty before you buy.
