Default DVD to Divx software

I'm planning on buying a cheap external HDD (about 250GB or so) to go with a laptop so that I can take my DVD, photo and music collection with me to university, less the bulk of countless CDs. What I'm looking for are recommendations for software that will take a DVD and rip it to Divx (or h.264) with just a single click. After a short Google I've found "ImToo DVD ripper" will do this but I'm not sure on how efficient and intuitive this software is. So what is everyone's personal recommendations?

yep, you can set your own resolution, choose what codec to use, and depending on what codec you're using(i use Xvid), its a quality setting(VBR video) so that saves space

I believe you are getting a Mac right? Why not try Handbrake? According to iBall it is great, although I have personally not used it. It will convert to .mp4 however but with the H.264 codec.

ImToo on a PC and Instant HandBrake to rip to iPod/PSP (using Xvid) format directly.
Google for "Instant HandBrake' and you'll see it. IH is a hell of a lot easier to use than ImTOo since there's absolutely nothing for you to configure initially unles you feel like tweaking the settings. Let it scan the DVD and then click the "Convert" button.
Then copy the video that IH made straight to a PSP or video iPod, or just watch it on the PC in QuickTime. Quality isn't too bad either...I play them from my iPod onto a beamer projector at work and although you will see some artifacts during really dark scenes, it doesn't take away from the movie itself.

Well I'm slightly reconsidering my options, the integrated graphics are really putting me off the Macbook and for only a small amount more I could get a much more capable Windows laptop (with quite a healthy GPU and much more ports) that's better for my needs. I know of handbrake and would use that if I do decide to get the Mac but that looks unlikely at this point.

I'll probably do this as h.264 is my preferred codec its just the convenience of using a single program would be nice but I can't find any decent ones that support h.264.

Edit: I'm trying out WinMenc as that apparantly supports h.264 encoding.

If you want the simple program to rip from DVD straight to H.264, then Instant Handbrake on a Mac is your only true choice.

we use a dvd player or Sky. but then again and ipod is quite a lot smaller than a stack of dvd's. But I haven't admitted that we use the DVD for anything other than training purposes and we certainly haven't changed the sky channel off of Sky news ever.
