is there a program out that can rip only the words from a song or only the instrumental music from a mp3?

there are but you're never going to get the singing completely out, but use cooledit

Yeah, it's almost impossible to do. I went to college for digital audio production and I can't even do it..... lol.

The software that attempts to do it usually cuts out the center channel since many songs have the vocals in the center and the instruments panned slighty to the left or right, but that's not always the case, and even when it is the case there are still usually traces of the vocals on the right/left channels so it's sounds all spooky.

my creative soundblaster has a karaoke function that trys to remove the vocals but it doesn't work at all. Its good at slowin down/speeding up vocals.

Depends...if you can get a hold of the original song's processing files you can.
Similiar to what Trent Reznor does...he releases some of his music in Garageband or Pro Tools format.
But since we're talking about MP3s here, I dunno. Never tried it.

I had a pair of headphones that managed to do this due to a broken cable. Worked perfectly as well :-\

theres a few plugins for winamp too i believe...
nothing great though
