Default Damn, I damaged something but I don't know what

I got a shiny new Zalman heatsink today, the 9700 one for socket 939. When I attempted to remove the stock heatsink, the thermal pad was a bit too think and it yanked the processor right off the ZIF socket as well as the whole ZIF socket itself.

Now my PC will turn on but it wont do anything, the fans just spin and there is no acitivity in the HDDs or IDE drives.

Now my question is how do I tell what is causing this problem? Should I replace the CPU or the motherboard? I have tried stripping the PC to bare bones, only the processor, graphics card and RAM are on the motherboard, it still does the same thing.

On the plus side, my PC is very silent now

Well, you know for sure that the problem resides on either the CPU or Mobo.
Check to see if you any of the pins on the CPU are bent or yanked out.
Or try to get your hands on another 939 processor to test if the problem is with your mobo.

You'll most likely have to replace one or the other. Just find a way to verify it by testing one of the parts.

I was hoping to avoid that since I don't really want to tamper with other peoples PC and remove thier CPUs to test mine. I don't have any others lying around so its a bit difficult.

I'll check the pins too, but can't a CPU be damaged even if all the pins are intact?

Perhaps this is a good excuse to splash out on a core 2 duo but I am really poor. Right now I'm using a damn pentium II and its frikin loud too.

Sadly, that's pretty much the only solution.

I guess you'll be a happy C2D owner soon.

No Fry's in the UK. Infact there aren't too many PC part shops in the UK, everything is online nowadays.

[off the topic]And the PC parts shops that are in the UK and are not online are very overpriced.[/off the topic]

Have you checked that the ZIF socket isnt damaged, because if it is that could be your problem.

I think that might be it, but it could also be the CPU. I am going to re open my PC and try inserting the CPU again. I think the ZIF level stayed down when the CPU was ripped off by the heatsink. I'm hoping that hasn't damaged anything.
-= Double Post =-
* MAJOR UPDATE *

It works now! I tried removing my Zalman heatsink and it confirmed that I did not secure the processor using the ZIF lever. I feel really stupid now.

Also my PC is absolutley silent on the lowest settings, the only gripe I have is my fan controller has no where to pass through the case, so it passes infront of one of my fans. This makes the wire shake slightly to cause a tiny bit of noise. Other than that it's amazing. I'll post pics in another thread later.

Thanks for all the help.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_insertion_force
Basically its a lever that means you dont have to put any force on your CPU to stick it in a socket,

Also for the fans, I think I'll put something in a drive bay like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813999251

Happened to me too. Was trying to re-apply better thermal paste. Tried to pull off the heatsink and because the processor was stuck to the heatsink, it simply came off (or got ripped off). And this was even before I had actually used the new processor even once.

Just took it off the heatsink, put it back in, and worked like nothing had happened. The ZIF sockets only tighten the pins, so if you just pull out the CPU, its not gonna bend the pins.
