Default I Think I Bricked My Laptop

Ok, well this actually happened about a few months ago, but I really didn't care about using my laptop until about today. Bear with me, this is probably gonna be a tad long.

So a few months ago, I was using my laptop when it started getting slow during the Windows startup. I didn't really care because I know I download a lot of crap and I was going to clean it anyways. But as I used it in the passing months, the user login screen (the screen that comes up in XP if you have multiple user accounts) would allow me to select my account and then it would show my wallpaper and freeze. I couldn't clean up my computer. I tried booting it in safe mode and restore it to a previous point, but since my laptop's battery was shot, it didn't remember any previous points (yes I know, I will buy a new battery at some point). So from here, I just left it like that.
Well then a few months later, I was bored again, and I tried to fix my laptop again. I tried to put in the Windows XP CD it came with and tried to reinstall the OS. Well it all seemed to go smoothly and I thought I had fixed it alright. However, after I installed it, it said I needed to activate my XP because it has exceeded it's trial period. Whenever I tell it to go activate it, it will show my wallpaper and then it will back out into the logon screen again. This is the same result for the rest of the accounts and I cannot boot into safe mode either. I've tried to search all over the internet for help and i've come to nothing that has actually fixed it (obviously), and this is pretty much my last hope to get my laptop working again.

I'll include more details upon request. Thanks for reading.

Let me get this straight you are completely locked out of your desktop and Tell's you to activate windows. If you do in fact have a legit copy of windows just call Microsoft
The Microsoft Windows Product Activation phone number (for the US anyhow) is 1-888-571-2048
They will ask a few Non-personal questions do something on their end and give you a new windows key so you can activate
hope this helps.

It won't ask me for a key. I just say "Yes I wanna activate my Windows XP" and then it will log me out.

The activation key has been blacked balled by Microsoft it's been used too many times. I have had this happen to me before just reinstall and activate by phone and all should be good.
BTW basically the only way to get stuff off your hard drive is to connect it to another computer as a slave drive if that's even possible with laptops.

I have yet to be prompted for any keycode on my laptop. So I need to reinstall XP again, right? And then give Microsoft a call?

F-Disk. Clean the whole hard drive. 0 and 1 it if you have to. Works for loads of problems like this and is without a doubt my favorite formatting tool.

F-Disk is a floppy or CD that your BIOS will boot instead of Windows if you tell it to. You can't format your Windows partition from within Windows silly.

Partition Recovery Boot Disk

1.2mg

Based on the Boot Disk Essentials disk above. Contents: Generic IDE CDROM driver, mouse driver, basic file manipulation tools, fdisk, format and testdisk.exe - a partition undelete tool which handles Windows and Linux partitions allowing them to be restored when lost or accidentally deleted.

Google

stick that on a floppy disk

here a link to drive scrubber 30 trial download and install on a 3 1/4 disk.
If your laptop only has a cd/dvd drive then do as mention above then copy files from diskette to cd and run.

My desktop only has CD/DVD drives. Is there a way to emulate a floppy (like DaemonTools) and have it copy onto a CD?

Do you have Nero? It can burn a cd that thinks its a floppy. It can make it bootable, everything. Just make sure you get an image. Also, look at this website: http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files010.shtml They have a bunch of "recovery" images.
