Default My computer won't turn off.

I don't know where was the best place to post this but I really hope someone can help me. I got Norton Anti Virus 2006 about a year ago. I installed it and had it scan my computer. It took about 10 hours since I hadn't scanned my computer for about a year. When it was finally done it showed me a list of files programs at risk of infection. I didn't really know what they were so I deleted them all, I know it was a bad move. Now ever since that happened, my computer won't shut down. What it does is that it goes thru the whole shutting down process but at the end, it stays at the last window and it stays like that. Also the CPUs light stays on. I have to hold the on button until it shuts down. I tried using recovery mode but it won't work it says it's unable to do it. I hope someone can help me.

Perhaps you could try reinstalling Windows as you or Norton may have delete some files.

do you have you windows xp disk put it in your cd drive turn off the computer, then if you havent done before you need to go into the bios and change the boot order to make the cd drive boot first, the save and exit the bios and it will say press any key to contine... (press any ky here) then you gunna have to reformat your dirve so before you do thing back-up any inportant files. then just do what the installer says it not very hard
have fun!!

Windows Vista is coming out on the 30th. So maybe you could just wait and install that. That should fix the problem. I'm sure you were going to upgrade evantually, right?

Do you think that's really going to fix the problem? It's free to upgrade right? What are the differences?

I don't remember the computer coming with a Windows Xp disk. I had to make my own recovery cds, I don't know if those are the ones you were talking about?

Windows vista is a new operating system so its not free.

And yes you can use recovery cds they should run on startup of your computer to format and install windows.

Its not free, but it completely installs new window files which means it'll install all the proper "shut down" features.

I remember visiting the MS website and it you it could be download for free, but it probably was a free trial?

I tried running recovery mode but it didn't not work it said it could not be started or something like that.

That was the beta. Trust me it would work, though.

If you upgrade to Windows Vista you won't need to backup your files, it keeps all your files. No idea whats wrong with your DVD player, though. You may need a new one, you can find them for about $20 on sale. Its cheaper than getting it fixed.

I was talking about recovery mode, it's gonna erase everything in my hard drive. Do you if I can upload my files to websites like megaload and websites like that? My DVD drive can read cds but not DVDs, I think I'm gonna have to renstall it

well then its technically not your DVD drive is it? anyway, you CAN upload to those sites, the question is if you want to spend the time. It takes a LONG time to upload files, its not just a snap of a second, especially a couple GBs. 2-3 GBS on my connection to megaupload was i think around 6-7 hours

Woah that's really long. I don't think it's the DVD drive that's causing the problem. I wanna get fixed though so I can back up my files first.

Buy a portable hard drive if you wanna back up your files quickly. If you don't wanna spend money just upload theme somewhere. Your choice.

What's the best website to upload my files. I don't really think there's a need for a portable hard drive for now.

I had an MP3 player, but I sold it. All I have is a 1GB and 2GB memory cards, but I don't think that's enough. I might have to compress some of my files. That's why I wanted a to upload my files somewhere else. My DVD Drive isn't working eighter.
