Default I need help with video playback

For some reason every video I try to play doesnt work. All I get is the sound, and a black screen. Dvd's work fine this happens when I try to play an avi, mpeg, divx, xvid, etc... None of them work properly. I have tried downloading and installing every codec pack I could get my hands on and none of them work. I have also updated drivers, and that didnt work either. Needless to say its getting super frustrating that I cant watch anything on my computer.

As tave says just download VLC from here and use that to play your media files. It plays practically everything straight away without any extra codecs or configuration.

seems the problem is bigger than just downloading the vlc player. As suggested I downloaded VLC and installed. Well it didnt work. I still have the same problem I had before. No video, only sound. Any other suggestions?

I've had this problem before, I restarted my computer and then everything worked fine. Try doing that.

This is a problem that has been ongoing for months. So I have rebooted many many times. This isnt a problem of something dropping out of memory or not loading into memory. so rebooting doesnt help.
