I would suggest reviewing the docs at http://www.w3schools.com/.

They show which tags are deprecated (no longer part of the standard.. on the short road to useless) and newer ones which are soon to be supported by browsers.

When I find a good "quick intro" to the new updates, I will modify this thread, but for now. I will leave it as it is!
