Default XP never stops loading.

My laptop's Windows XP will just keep loading forever on the splash screen. I can boot into safe mode. I'm not sure what the correct terminology for this is called, so I wasn't really sure what to Google.

When did this start? You could try a system restore, virus/spyware scan and ihey don't work, format your laptop and re-install Windows.

Started last night. It said it would auto-shut off (probably XP update) and then it did. I turned it on and that's what happened. System restore's a no-go on this laptop because the battery is dead. The internal clock resets back to Janauary 1, 2003 all the time, and it skews the time table.

Looks like you'll have to format it.

Something wrong with the CMOS. On PCs its easy to reset, but with laptops you may have to contact your manufacturer.
It's probably not a hard drive problem since you can boot into safe mode.

A format may work, but if you are still under warranty, get the CMOS thing checked out.

I don't think I can go into recovery without an XP CD though. I have an NEC Versa E600.

I can get into Recovery mode w/o the CD, so you should at least try it...

If you get the XP CD through special means, and you still have your XP key somewhere (A sticker on the laptop?) then you can easily reinstall the OS and it will be genuine.

I actually had this problem a few days ago. Uninstall any programs which you installed beore it started happening, and delete a few unnecessary things.
