Default how do i install a LG dvd burner?

well ive installed a few cd drives on past computers, but they were a little older. i bought a new dell dimension E520 like in november. i bought a GSA-H42N-BK LG DVD Burner well i pop open my computer, and in the past there was 3 cables i had to attatch. a power one, a long one, and a thin grayinsh one. i attatched the power cable sucessfully (it opens and closes) however it did not come with any cables so i took a thin grayish cable a a long cable from my old computers and tried to attatch them but i see no ports for it. the drive that came installed on my computer as completely different ports on it than the one i bought. I've done some research and got confused with IDE and SATA and i honestly dont know what to do. can anyone help me?

UH, this SHOULD have a port for the "long gray cable" (aka IDE cable). Sata is a much narrower, compacted wire for most new computer harddrives and CD/DVD burners and readers.

That's the picture FROM newegg. Does it look like that on the back? If not then they ****ed up and sent you the wrong thing. Otherwise, the IDE cable should fit. (Sometimes I've noticed the IDE ports are snug, you have to push a little. OR if you prefer, put the IDE cable on outside the box, then put it in.)

It's most likely an IDE drive, I don't think many (if any) DVD drives come in SATA.

As for that "thin cable", that's probably the audio cable that can optionally plug into your sound card.

A picture would help immensly.

To the motherboard lol.

However, there probably is already an IDE cable (that's the cable that's probably gray and is like 1.5 inches wide) that already goes to your other cd / dvd drives.

There may be an additional IDE plug coming off of that, check it.

Otherwise, consult your computer's manual.

Yeah.

Call your computer manufacturer's tech support, or read the manual (LOL , never thought that'd be appropriate )

No, no different sizes. IDE are preset sizes. The only other option is SATA. (Yes Hardrive, they DO make SATA) Your specs on that drive say it clearly.\

If there is no IDE, then you can't use an IDE device right? Logic tells me that much...
Anyway, just get an RMA and pick up a SATA interface drive liek this one. Here is the page of all the newegg sata DVD/CD burners.

Well it should come with a cable, but an extra doesn't hurt for that price and I wouldn't want to wait for the drive then find the cable didn't come. (I have an extra to do any backups of friend's HDDs and stuff like that.)

Just be aware that drive is
